The Joseph unit uses the Bible story included in Genesis 37 and 45. Of all his twelve sons, Joseph was Jacob's favorite. Jacob treated Joseph differently from his other sons. This created a great deal of jealousy. The brothers became even more jealous after hearing Joseph's dreams. Finally the brothers plotted against Joseph and ended up selling Joseph to a caravan of Ishmaelites that was heading for Egypt. The brothers, presenting their father with Joseph's special coat covered in blood, convince Jacob that Joseph is indeed dead. Once in Egypt, the Ishmaelites sold Joseph as a slave to the captain of the Pharaoh's guards, Potiphar. But Potiphar's wife accused Joseph of something he had not done, and Joseph was thrown into prison. When Pharaoh began having disturbing dreams, he sent for Joseph. Joseph told the Pharaoh about a time of famine that was coming to Egypt. Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of helping Egypt get ready for this time. When the famine hit Canaan, Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to beg for food. Joseph recognized his brothers and through a series of clever schemes, finally revealed himself to his brothers and invited all his family to come to Egypt and live. Through Joseph, God took an act meant for evil and turned it into something good. Children will explore these concepts: God worked through Joseph. God works through people like you and me to bring about good. God is with us always. God turned evil into good.
