Therapist husband finds dead jogger ( ) (the patient's secret refers to one of Lily Bradley's patients, who disguises herself and pays cash, so Lily doesn't know her true identity.) Lily bradley, psychiatrist, lives in an upper middle class Enclave, on an island in British columbia. Her husband Tom Bradley is a professor of psychology at some University there on the island, Victoria. Her husband comes back from jogging early in the morning, with blood stains on him, and when he calls 911, detective Duval comes on the scene: "detective Duval regards the Bradley's 12 year old daughter with her pink hair and heavy eye makeup. Lily sees the cop's gaze move over their pretty heritage House again, going to the bronze plaque on the gate post that reads Oak Tree Therapy, L. Bradley, PhD. Lily sees this homicide cop with the inscrutable face and combat boots look up at the Dormer windows in the attic. Lily feels a punch in her belly as she notices Matthew's little white face in the window, staring down at the events unfolding on their front lawn. Hot anger spikes through Lily's fear, and it fires quickly into a kind of protective rage. Her precious children. Her beautiful house. Her perfect life. She feels it all sliding, crumbling away like those sandstone cliffs into the sea. Bile surges into her throat. She wants to flee. She also wants to stand her ground, dig in her heels, stop - fix - everything. Defend her family and her life to the death. Because they're all she has. They're all she knows now." Once I read this about this character and her family, immediately wanted her and her husband to go down. That's just the way I feel about it: Lily Bradley is a hateful character. Here's more evidence of why I can't stand this character. Her husband is taken to jail, and while he's being led to the police car, he tells Lily to call her friend, the attorney. A big shot media circus attorney. "Lily dials Dianne's office. As the phone rings, her attention is drawn to the framed photos of her family on the hallway wall. Her favorite is a beautiful shot of the four of them in Aruba, laughing in sunshine on a sugar-white Beach fringed by a turquoise sea. Another image shows Lily and Tom on a glamping trip in Clayoquot Sound, taken to celebrate their wedding anniversary. They're smiling, arms around each other. Emotion blurs her vision. Another photo is the four of them on Safari in Botswana. It was taken by their guide on the day they saw three of Africa's 'Big five' - a rhinoceros with a baby, a herd of elephants, and a leopard in a tree with a kill." I heard about this thriller in PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/tip-sheet/article/88659-pw-picks-books-of-the-week-march-7-2022.html). I appreciated how the author touched on class in a Canadian upper crusty suburb. Some parts of the ending seemed to throw logic out with the recyclables, but those are minor quibbles. You know it's a good book when you can't wait for the workday to end so you can crawl into your reading corner! aucune critique | ajouter une critique
