Ce roman propose une uchronie très intéressante, plaçant la question de l'antisémitisme au cœur des États-Unis, pendant le seconde guerre mondiale. L'auteur a choisi de raconter son histoire à travers les yeux d'un enfant de neuf ans. Ainsi, la situation paraît moins dramatique et l'atmosphère générale n'est pas trop pesante. Il parvient très vite à nous faire entrer dans sa famille et à rendre la vie en son sain des plus intéressante. Le côté presque historique permet de se rendre compte que parfois, le sort du monde dépend de moments charnières et qu'il en faut peu pour que tout puisse basculer. Un livre très intéressant, parfois passionnant, mais avec une fin un peu en demi-teinte, l'auteur stoppant presque net en fin de l'année 1942 sa chronique familiale et ne donnant qu'un bref résumé concernant la fin de la guerre trois années plus tard. Le sujet est intéressant, mais le traitement est trop long. Le style de Roth, avec ses phrases interminables et son souci du détail, va trop loin à mon goût (pardon, je sais que je touche à un monstre sacré). ( )

Philip Roth has written a terrific political novel, though in a style his readers might never have predicted — a fable of an alternative universe, in which America has gone fascist and ordinary life has been flattened under a steamroller of national politics and mass hatreds.

Young Philip's greatest epiphany is to recognise the difference between history as taught in school - harmless and inevitable - and history as it's lived through, "the relentless unforeseen". His novel is a different kind of history again, an imagined past which, if we learn from it, might save us from a calamitous future. It's not Roth's funniest novel (and there's hardly any sex). But in its sweep and chutzpah, it ranks with his great trilogy of the late-90s. Isn't it time they gave him the Nobel?
