Fiction. Suspense. Thriller. Multiple Anthony Award winner William Kent Krueger returns to Minnesota's North Woods country for another chilling entry in his Cork O'Connor series. In this thrilling mystery, former sheriff Cork O'Connor confronts the paranormal while investigating baffling murders. After 17-year-old Charlotte Kane-the beautiful, brilliant, and brooding daughter of a rich widower-disappears on a drunken New Years' Eve snowmobile ride, a raging blizzard soon snuffs out all search efforts. When her body is found during the spring thaw four months later, preliminary evidence implicates her ex-boyfriend-Ojibwe bad-boy, Solemn Winter Moon. But then a second Charlotte Kane turns up dead, and Cork isn't sure of anything any more. David Chandler's riveting narration of this hair-raising novel highlights the mystical elements in an electrifying tale of intrigue and foreboding. Listeners certainly won't want to miss Krueger's acclaimed Copper River. "Krueger skillfully crafts enough plot twists to keep everybody guessing through the bloody climax to the thrilling end."-Publishers Weekly "[Blood Hollow] takes Krueger's work to an entirely new level. The prose is so good and the plotting so deft that readers will be hard put to stop reading once they begin."-Chicago Sun-Times.… (plus d'informations)

As this is book #4 of the series, one wonders why the Sheriff's put up with Cork's bullshit, continually meddling in the affairs of the small town department that gets more murders per capita than the worst part of Detroit; Also, the many shocking and coincidental secrets arose and detracted from the multiple story lines. I was enthralled with the plot; the characters were familiar...even the sheriff with a different name but still the same dufus. ( )

I am really enjoying this series and these characters, but this is my least favorite book so far.
It just seemed like too much was going on, too many storylines. Still a good read. ( )

With a blizzard impending, a teenage girl goes missing after leaving a party on a snowmobile. When her body is recovered in the spring thaw, Sam Winter Moon's grandson Solemn becomes the top suspect. Cork believes that although Solemn had a record of trouble with the police that he is not guilty (or capable) of murder. The inexperience of the newly elected sheriff who only ran for political gain shows. Cork, although no longer sheriff, investigates for the sake of his old friend Sam Winter Moon and to help Jo defend Solemn. The proximity of the Ojibwe reservation to the town of Aurora always provides an interesting setting. In the book, Solemn has a spiritual experience that amazes some and causes others to question his sanity. Other characters including the priest and Cork find themselves as spiritual seekers. Sin eating is a theme in the book as well. I'm excited to see Cork's new position at the end of the book. Early on, I identified the two people I thought most likely to be the perpetrators. One of them was the correct person, but the other was the main red herring, and I was left guessing until the very end. I look forward to the next installment. I listened to the audiobook version. William Kent Krueger is becoming one of my favorite authors. His books are, to me, on a higher level than most similar books in that they seem to have it all - great characters, great stories, great sense of place, and general life things to think about. He makes me think I'd like to visit that area of the country, although perhaps not in the winter. 😱

His book remind me in some ways of the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache novels by Louise Penny, which I also love and would like to visit and meet the people there.

This story was very complex with several suspects in a murder case. The story progressed in a somewhat straight line except for a slight detour around an appearance by Jesus, but then it suddenly took a really sharp OMFG turn that changed everything. But even that didn't give away the actual perp, which was a total surprise to me.

The book can be read standalone, but it's probably more enjoyable to read the previous books in the series, as there are references to the past here and there. And if you like this book, you'll probably want to read the earlier ones anyway.

By the way, the audiobook was well done. David Chandler did a good job, and I had no trouble understanding him. ( )

All my mystery loving friends are missing out if they haven't tried William Kent Krueger. I'm sorry I waited as long as I did to start. I continue to love Corc O'Connor. The characterization just grows richer with each book I read. The mix of the wilderness of northern Minnesota and the mix of races in the small town of Aurora make compelling reading. The secondary characters are also very strong and they continue to change and grow. Except the old shaman Henry Mallou, he's perfect just the way he is(not sure about spelling since I'm listening to these). In this one I was sure I had the murderer picked out but, alas, I was wrong.

So I've already started listening to the next one and plan to listen to the entire series and I'll be so sad when I catch up. ( )
