As with all books by this author, the pacing, characters and momentum are top notch. That said, Greg tends towards crime/suspense stories with multiple sub-plots with scientific, political or historical elements woven into the story fabric. Instead, this is far simpler but still well crafted, especially where momentum is concerned. The other differentiator is it doesn't take place in Natchez, nor involve characters from his other stories. But like all books by this author, the plot goes haywire as it approaches the climax making the reader turn pages much faster. I've read just about every book he's written and while I enjoyed it, I prefer the complexity of his others such as the Natchez Burning trilogy. If you enjoy kidnapping stories, this will appeal to you. Were I able, I'd rate this book 3.5 stars rather than 3 since its well written, fast paced and fun! FROM BARNES & NOBLE: It begins on a perfect night, with a perfect family about to be trapped in a perfect crime... Will Jennings is a successful young doctor in Jackson, Mississippi, with a thriving practice, a beautiful wife, and a five-year-old daughter he loves beyond measure. But Will and his family are being watched by a con man and psychopath who may be a genius. A man who has never been caught and whose victims have never talked to the police. A man whose life's work strikes at the heart of every family's unspoken fear: the unstoppable kidnapping. But this time he's picked the wrong family to terrorize. Because Will and Karen Jennings aren't going to watch helplessly as he victimizes them. They aren't going to let him get away with it. They're going to fight back... Although there were many parts that were unbelievable, the story constantly moved along. It was amazing what the husband was able to do: create a special drug, fly a plane under circumstances with no power, make contact with top cell phone guy, get away with ignoring FBI rules, etc. Daughter needing insulin acted beyond normal. Wife and her pity issues at beginning deciding OK to be a Mom. Kidnappers were too smart at times, Appartient à la sérieEst contenu dansEst en version abrégée dansReader's Digest Condensed Books: Decisive Measures • In a Dry Season • 24 Hours • Nora, Nora par Reader's Digest Livros Condensados: 24 horas | À primeira vista | Cidade em chamas | O observatório par Reader's Digest Livros Condensados: Antes da Despedida | Acção Decisiva | A Enseada dos Segredos | 24 Horas par Reader's Digest

Attention to detail made the characters seem real making the horror of the experience all the more terrifying. The medical details were surprisingly accurate. Not sure where Iles got his medical info but very well portrayed. THe human frailties of everyone made them more believable. A kidnapping for ransom and for revenge. Much excitement and scariness. ( )
