Our Family's Stories

As Matelda grows older she realizes that she has never shared important stories with her family. These stories help family members in their daily struggles.
While this happens, Matelda also faces health issues.
An enjoyable book with realistic characters and a strong sense of place. I felt like part of the family! ( )

I listened to the audio version of this book. I'm not sure but I might have rated higher if I'd read it myself. I found many of the voices of the characters annoying. As for the story, I was only interested in Dominica and Silvio's stories and some of the history e.g. the Italian immigrants in Scotland, the sinking of the prison ship, the power of the awful priests, etc. ( )

Not my favorite of this author's. I still remember hearing her read in person at a Charleston Library event. What a thrill. I hear her voice in my head now when I read, but, in this case, not the vibrancy. ( )

I'm not familiar with Adriana Trigiani's more recent books although I did enjoy her older ones years ago. This is much like those, a good story based on family and faith with strong women characters. Instead of being about an Italian American family as those earlier books were, this story takes place in Italy and spans the 1920s into the 1950s.

The story centers around the mother of the current family matriarch. Near death, Matelda wants to tell her mother's story and will reveal facts about her mother that are unknown to Maltelda's children. Like her daughter, Domenica was a strong woman. She became a nurse and trained and worked in France and Scotland. The WWII years were pivotal to her life and Trigiani's inclusion of the fate of Italian citizens in Italy and Britian was enlightening.

There has been much discussion on LT about the use of dual timelines in novels. So here is a warning, jumping around the timeline was heavily done here. ( )

I don't think the dual timeline worked for this book. The modern timeline added very little to the overall story and the WWII timeline was way more interesting. (It doesn't help that the jacket/back cover copy was misleading, so I kept waiting for this book to deliver on a promise it wasn't intended to meet.) The author makes a lot of writing choices throughout that I found baffling. I think this would actually make a good TV show, but as a book it didn't always work for me. ( )
