Since the thirteenth century the Venetian island of Murano has been the centre of Italian glass production. Early in the twentieth century Murano re-established its dominance in the world of art glass by mixing traditional craft with the innovative designs of modern artists and sculptors. Anzolo Fuga played a prominent role in its renaissance. A multi-faceted artist from a glass-making dynasty, Fuga created designs for A. V. E M. Arte Vetraria Muranese (Murano Art Glass House) that are, as author Rosa Barovier Mentasti writes 'extraordinarily modern for the time and possess a chromatic and decorative impact that still appear exceptional today. His works speak the language of the 1950s and '60s with such freshness that they do not look out of date in the most contemporary of environments'. Anzolo Fuga is the first monograph on this exceptional designer, whose works are collected worldwide. It is illustrated with over 170 colour photographs of spectacular objects never seen before. Along with a biography of the artist, Anzolo Fuga presents a catalogue of his works for A. V. E. M. Rosa Barovier Mentasti was born in 1948 into one of the oldest Muranese glass working families. She has been the curator or co-curator of many prestigious exhibitions in Italy and abroad since 1977. Aside from writing articles for numerous magazines and material on specialised glass techniques for reference books, Mentasti is the author of two important works: Venetian Glass from the Middle Ages to Today and Venetian Glass 1890-1990.
