This was a revision of Farnells original which goes back to 1891. The Introduction by Cotter is an overview of Herododus' life and replaces the Farnell's preface of the original. It is unclear to me what changes Marie Goff made - probably not many. It is a light adaption of 20 stories from Herodotus. Though Ionic forms are replaced by Attic, the vocabulary is unchanged from Herodotus. It includes fairly extensive notes on points of grammar and idiom and a vocabulary. The cross referencing of the notes was a little counter intuitive for me. However, once I sused them, the notes proved very helpful and as the text is only lightly adapted they would be helpful to someone reading an unadapted text of Herodotus. This classic selection, drawn from the whole of Herodotus' work has been frequently set for GCSE, and used as a first prose text for early Greek learners. It presents a selection of typically anecdotal 'history' from Herodotus, and a useful introduction to the versatility and variety of his writings: historical narrative in the Battle of Salamis; curious anecdote in Arion and the dolphin; anthropological research in Egypt, Arabia and Scythia. At the same time, it makes Herodotus readily accessible to the beginner. Herodotus' Ionic dialect has been changed into the Attic Greek which will be familiar to early language learners. Notes, full vocabulary and an index of proper names are provided to suit the student at that stage. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
