Fiction. Literature. Historical Fiction. HTML:NATIONAL BESTSELLER ? ??Marvelous . . . I just had to be there with the Post cereal heiress through every twist and turn.???Martha Hall Kelly, New York Times bestselling author of Lilac Girls
??New-money heiress Marjorie Post isn??t content to remain a society bride as she remakes herself into a savvy entrepreneur, a visionary philanthropist, a presidential hostess, and much more. Allison Pataki brings a towering legend to life.???Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network

Mrs. Post, the President and First Lady are here to see you. . . . So begins another average evening for Marjorie Merriweather Post. Presidents have come and gone, but she has hosted them all. Growing up in the modest farmlands of Battle Creek, Michigan, Marjorie was inspired by a few simple rules: always think for yourself, never take success for granted, and work hard??even when deemed American royalty, even while covered in imperial diamonds. Marjorie had an insatiable drive to live and love and to give more than she got. From crawling through Moscow warehouses to rescue the Tsar??s treasures to outrunning the Nazis in London, from serving the homeless of the Great Depression to entertaining Roosevelts, Kennedys, and Hollywood??s biggest stars, Marjorie Merriweather Post lived an epic life few could imagine.

Marjorie??s journey began gluing cereal boxes in her father??s barn as a young girl. No one could have predicted that C. W. Post??s Cereal Company would grow into the General Foods empire and reshape the American way of life, with Marjorie as its heiress and leading lady. Not content to stay in her prescribed roles of high-society wife, mother, and hostess, Marjorie dared to demand more, making history in the process. Before turning thirty she amassed millions, becoming the wealthiest woman in the United States. But it was her life-force, advocacy, passion, and adventurous spirit that led to her stunning legacy.

And yet Marjorie??s story, though full of beauty and grandeur, set in the palatial homes she built such as Mar-a-Lago, was equally marked by challenge and tumult. A wife four times over, Marjorie sought her happily-ever-after with the blue-blooded party boy who could not outrun his demons, the charismatic financier whose charm turned to betrayal, the international diplomat with a dark side, and the bon vivant whose shocking secrets would shake Marjorie and all of society. Marjorie did everything on a grand scale, especially when it came to love.

This is like the East Coast, prudish version of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo—not entirely as exciting as the time period in which she lived and experienced. ( )

this started off really well, with an interesting look into the development of a talented businesswoman during a time when the business world did not readily accept women. The latter portion of the book kind of devolves into sob story after sob story where her various marriages fail and none of it is ever her fault in any way, which was a bit tedious. ( )

This novel is narrated by Marjorie Merriweather Post from the time that the family moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, so that C. W. Post could be treated for numerous physical symptoms at Dr. Kellogg's Sanitarium. It is hard to say if that treatment was helpful. While in Battle Creek the family stayed with Mrs. Gardner, a Christian Scientist, and a wonderful cook. Once C. W. started eating normal food again, he recovered very well. Marjorie had a very close relationship with her father. Marjorie married and divorced four times during her life, built or refurbished 5 homes in NYC, Long Island, the Adirondacks, Mar-a-logo, and Washington, DC. Upon the death of her father C. W. Post, she inherited the Postum Corporation, and managed to help run it even though she is a woman. She was known for her fabulous parties, her philanthropy, and her business smarts, but she had no, long-term success with her husbands. She lived like royality after her father's success. ( )

I knew next to nothing about Marjorie Post before reading this book. Heiress to the Postum Cereal Company started by her father, C. W. Post, in Battle Creek, Michigan, she was a businesswoman in a time (1914) when it was uncommon. Along with her second husband, the financier E. F. Hutton, the company acquired other food businesses and eventually became General Foods.

Sadly, Marjorie was not so successful in her personal life - she was married and divorced four times. Much of the book focuses on the marriages.

She also became incredibly wealthy - one of her many homes was Mar-A-Lago. The book is written in first person, and it got rather tiresome to read about Marjorie talking about her jewelry, artwork, yachts, plane, parties, homes, and their furnishings.

Like other reviewers, I felt one of the most interesting parts of the book was her childhood in Battle Creek, where her family went so her ill father could undergo treatment from his future business rival, J. W. Kellogg.

The other interesting part was the time she spent in Russia in the mid-1930s with her third husband, Joseph E. Davies, who was serving as the United States ambassador to that country. While there, Post acquired a number of pre-Soviet Russian art treasures for a fraction of their value. Many of these are on display at her final home in Washington, D. C., now a museum. ( )

Her wealth and continual reference to it, annoyed me! Otherwise very interesting. ( )
