It's aliiiiiiiive! New York Times bestselling authors of My Lady Jane are back with the electric, poetic, and (almost) historical tale of the one and only Mary Shelley.

Mary may have inherited the brilliant mind of her late mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, but she lives a drab life above her father's bookstore, waiting for an extraordinary idea that'll inspire a work worthy of her parentageâ??and impress her rakishly handsome (and super-secret) beau, Percy Shelley.

Ada Lovelace knows a thing or two about superstar parents, what with her dad being Lord Byron, the most famous poet on Earth. But her passions lie far beyond the artsâ??in mechanical engineering, to be exact. Alas, no matter how precise Ada's calculations, there's always a man willing to claim her ingenious ideas as his own.

Pan, a.k.a. Practical Automaton Number One, is Ada's greatest idea yet: a machine that will change the world, if only she can figure out how to make him truly autonomous . . . or how to make him work at all.

When fate connects our two masterminds, Mary and Ada learn that they are faeâ??magical people with the ability to make whatever they imagine become real. But when their dream team results in a living, breathing, thinking PAN, Mary and Ada find themselves hunted by a mad scientist who won't stop until he finds out how they made a real boy out of spare parts.

With comic genius and a truly electrifying sense of adventure, Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows continue their campaign to turn the classics on their head in this YA fantasy that's perfect for fans of Frankenstein and The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue.… (plus d'informations)

I have to say, I liked this version of Mary Shelley way better than what I know about the real Mary. And I quite enjoyed seeing Lord Byron and Percy Shelley portrayed as foolish men, even if they weren't in real life (although the historical record kind of suggests they weren't all that awesome). And I loved the idea of Mary and Ada being friends - two strong and talented women joining forces makes for a great story. ( )

I love listening to the audio books in this series, where the premise is alternate history with happy endings and magic. The first half of this one was my favorite so far but then it got a little long. Still super enjoyable. ( )

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Ada Lovelace and Mary Wollstonecraft were best friends? And created an automaton? And had Percy Shelley helping them evade a mad scientist? Well, you are in luck because Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows already did that for you with their latest collaboration, My Imaginary Mary! While it wasn’t my favorite collaboration of theirs, it is a rollicking good time. The combination of Mary Wollstonecraft and Ida Lovelace is crazy. Add the automaton and the mad scientist, and the word insane comes to mind. All you can do is stay for the ride. For a wholly distracting and yet charming insanity break, you can count on Mademoiselles Ashton, Hand, and Meadows to provide just that. ( )

This is a 'what if' book written by the hilariously brilliant authors of the Lady Jane series. What if Mary Shelley and Ada Lovelace were contemporaries and became friends? With the help of a faerie godmother, Mary and Ada meet. The godmother tells them they are both fae and have the power to make anything they imagine real. Together they create a clockwork boy (PAN), who becomes alive with the help of lightning and a little magic. But all magic has a price. They end up on the run from the villain of the story, as well as some notable historical characters: Percy Shelley and Lord Byron. Along the way they accomplish some amazing feats: riding cross-country on the back of a clockwork horse for example.

I didn't know much about either Mary Shelley or Ada Lovelace before reading this book. I wish I had. Part of what made My Lady Jane so much fun was knowledge of the real characters and comparing the two. I missed that with book. This book was still a lot of fun, I just felt like I could have gotten more out of it. The synthesized voice (in my ARC copy) didn't bother me at all and seemed appropriate given the book's main characters.

The main theme of the book is what it means to be alive. Our main characters struggle with this through the entire story, sometimes contradicting themselves. Except for this heavy topic, the book doesn't take itself too seriously. Overall, I love these series of books and can't wait for the next one. ( )
