The cover photo and title of the book are pretty misleading. ( ) Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this twisted, cleverly written book! I absolutely loved My Lovely Wife by this author and although this story plays out at a slower pace, it did not disappoint! Beth, the main character, is on a strange but necessary road trip with her older brother and younger sister-siblings she hasn't exactly been close to over the past several years. You can read the synopsis to find out the guts of the story. I'm here to tell you to pay attention since the pace may seem languid. It isn't. The author drops one-liner story-changing sentences at random times! Sentences that make you think, "Wow! I did not see that one coming!" And they completely change the direction of the story. The dominos fall at a rapid pace at the end when Beth and her siblings finally reach their destination. It will keep you guessing right up to the last sentence! Anyone up for a road trip from hell around the country with your estranged siblings? Yep, most people would pass; however, when you have an inheritance to gain that states you must go on this road trip, well you make do. The two week road trip consists of all types of non stop twists and turns that leaves you scratching your head wondering what was that about? The finale was a complete shocker as it brought everything together and you will be saying, NO WAY!!! This one had a very promising premise to it, and that's what drew me to it. And honestly, I quite enjoyed the first half. I also enjoyed the "you can't trust anyone, including the narrator" aspect. But then things began to get a little outlandish. Yes, I get that this is part thriller, part mystery, so some outlandishness is called for but I began to get the creeping suspicion that Downing was writing herself into a corner, and wasn't sure how to get out of it. While the ending wasn't bad, per se, it still seemed as though Downing just kind of got the the point where she decided, screw it, this is how I'm gonna wrap it up. It felt rushed, and it felt a little too far-fetched. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
"In the latest thrillingly savage stand-alone from the twisted mind behind mega hit My Lovely Wife comes the story of a family--not unlike your own--just with a few more violent tendencies thrown in.... Beth, Portia, and Eddie Morgan haven't all been together in years. And for very good reasons--we'll get to those later. But when their wealthy grandfather dies and leaves a cryptic final message in his wake, the siblings and their respective partners must come together for a cross-country road trip to fulfill his final wish and--more importantly--secure their inheritance. But time with your family can be tough. It is for everyone. It's even harder when you're all keeping secrets and trying to forget a memory--a missing person, an act of revenge, the man in the black truck who won't stop following your car--and especially when at least one of you is a killer and there's a body in the trunk. Just to name a few reasons. But money is a powerful motivator. It is for everyone"-- Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
