"I've loved every one of Susanna's books! Bedrock research and a butterfly's delicate touch with characters??historical fiction that sucks you in and won't let go!" ??Diana Gabaldon, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Outlander

From international bestselling author Susanna Kearsley comes a historical tale of intrigue and revolution in Scotland, where the exile of King James brought plots, machinations, suspicion and untold bravery to light. Told partially in flashbacks, The Vanished Days weaves in and out of the timeline of the author's beloved New York Times bestseller The Winter Sea, unraveling an investigation into a young widow's secrets to unveil a plot that resonates to the highest echelons of Scotland's social and political leaders.

In the autumn of 1707, old enemies from the Highlands to the Borders are finding common ground as they join to protest the new Union with England. At the same time, the French are preparing to launch an invasion to bring the young exiled Jacobite king back to Scotland to reclaim his throne, and in Edinburgh the streets are filled with discontent and danger.

Queen Anne's commissioners, seeking to calm the situation, have begun paying out money sent up from London to settle the losses and wages owed to those Scots who took part in the disastrous Darien expedition eight years earlier??an ill-fated venture that left Scotland all but bankrupt.

When the young widow of a Darien sailor comes forward to collect her husband's wages, her claim is challenged. One of the men assigned to investigate has only days to decide if she's honest, or if his own feelings are blinding him to the truth.

Set at the cusp of the eighteenth century, in the midst of the Jacobite Rebellion, The Vanished Days is a brilliantly told story of espionage, loyalties divided, boundless courage and enduring love.… (plus d'informations)

If you haven’t started this series, I would say that this addition could be read alone. I’m sure you wi be interested in the other books to discover what happens to the characters.

This book is a prequel to this Scottish series so I was delighted to read this and not feel as if I would be confused. I am looking forward to reading the other 2 books as the story has such rich characters and enticing plot. The time line alternates to provide the historical aspects to which the narrator presents as he proceeds to write “the truths” from the past. I was drawn into the storyline and the various characters who all seem to have their own motives for their actions. I look forward to seeing how it plays out in the previously published books. ( )

The story jumps around at various points between 1685 and 1707 during the time of the Jacobite Rebellion. At question is whether a widow was really married to a man killed during the Darien expedition. It is up to Sgt. Adam Williamson to find whether her claim is true or not. The finding could prove dangerous to the widow or to the man's daughter Lily. The way the story was told by skipping around within the time period did not work well, and I found myself nearly abandoning the book several times. I did enjoy the setting--both time period and location--but the story seemed disjointed because of its telling. This appears to be the third book of a Scottish series by the author but was not advertised as such. I did not read earlier installments. I did not feel I'd missed anything by failing to read those stories. ( )

The Vanished Days was full of mystery Scottish history & romance! I absolutely enjoyed soaking up all of the historical facts in this book! The rich & detailed setting was amazing to read about. It does have a slow pace but don't let that fool you! Its one of those books the more you read the more you're drawn in & once everything starts to come together you won't be able to turn the pages fast enough! & the ending, that was a great twist! I will definitely be reading this one again!

My friend, my bonny friend, when we are old,
And hand in hand go tottering down the hill,
May we be rich in love's refinèd gold,
May love's gold coin be current with us still.

May love be sweeter for the vanished days,
And your most perfect beauty still as dear
As when your troubled singer stood at gaze
In the dear March of a most sacred year.

May what we are be all we might have been,
And that potential, perfect, O my friend,
And may there still be many sheafs to glean
In our love's acre, comrade, till the end.

And may we find when ended is the page
Death but a tavern on our pilgrimage.

—John Masefield, "The Word"

For James Graeme and the hundreds, known and nameless, who set sail for Darien, with Scotland's hopes and future in their hands; whose passing left holes in the hearts and lives of those who loved them, and who deserve to be better remembered.
