"Los Angeles County Sheriff's detective Eve Ronin and her soon-to-retire partner, Duncan Pavone, are running a 24-7 sting in a guard-gated enclave of palatial homes in Calabasas. Their luxury McMansion is a honey trap, set to lure in the violent home invaders terrorizing the community. The trap works, leaving three intruders dead, a body count that nearly includes Eve and Duncan. Eve's bosses are eager to declare the case closed, but there are too many unanswered questions for her to let go. Was the trap actually for her, bloody payback for Eve's very public takedown of a clique of corrupt deputies? Or is there an even deadlier secret lurking behind those opulent gates? Eve's refusal to back down and her relentless quest for the truth make her both the hunter...and the prey." -- from amazon.com… (plus d'informations)

I am so glad I read this book right after book 2, as it kept the characters fresh in my mind. Eve and her partner, Duncan, are assigned to go undercover as a wealthy couple, in an attempt to draw burglars to them. They are trying to break a ring of burglaries occurring in gated communities. At their rental home, they encounter 3 men who try to rob them. It goes badly, one of the men escapes. Eve chases him to a store, where he is killed by the security guard.
Later, a woman is hospitalized after giving birth to a stillborn son, because the medical examiner is concerned for her life.
As Eve digs deeper into these cases, she finds there is much more underneath the surface. She is still dealing with the hatred of some of the cops in the dept., her injuries, and now - the tv series about her life! Fun, and full of action, as always! ( )

Eve Ronin's third case begins when she and her partner Duncan are on in sting in a gated community. There have been a number of home invasion robberies. They are supposed to be under constant surveillance by the sheriff's department. But when the invaders show up, their backup doesn't.

Eve ends up in a car chase after the third suspect which ends in a trendy supermarket and with the suspect shot by a store security guard. Since Eve was driving, and wrecked, a very expensive car that had been impounded, and the chase caused a number of civilian injuries, it looks like Eve is in all sorts of trouble.

She's heartily disliked by many of her fellow officers after many of them went to jail when Eve uncovered corruption in the department. It looks like the officer who should have sent backup was more interested in revenge.

The Chief of Police is more interested in getting positive press for his department and is quick to declare the robbery ring as a completed case and a total win for the department. He even gives the store security guard the highest medal the sheriff's department has to answer in a very public ceremony.

Meanwhile, Eve and Duncan catch another case that looks like a stillbirth at home but soon turns into a much more complicated case of fetal abduction and murder. And Eve is dealing with her agent who wants to sell Eve's story for a television series and has a script for her to read. Then the family of one of the corrupt cops who committed suicide during one of her earlier cases sues for $10 million and the sheriff's department isn't supporting her.

This was an excellent and fast-paced thriller with lots of action and a pretty complex mystery. I enjoye Nicol Zanzarella's narration of the story. ( )

*ARC provided by Netgalley for a honest review. Thankyou Thomas and Mercer.

I was thrilled to receive an ARC for this. I loved the first two books in the series and was shattered to find the third book wouldn't be available for ten months. I was checking Netgalley weekly to see when the ARC's would be available and I was thrilled to be approved. And the book itself didn't disappoint.

Eve Ronin is back and raring to fight crime and give justice. Unfortunately her fellow officers still mostly don't like her, her superior officers definitely don't and the police department as a whole is ready to sacrifice her for public opinion. I like Eve a lot but she has zero social skills - she really needs to find a way to do her job and not piss off everyone she meets. Like the last two books it continued to annoy me that Eve still seesaws between political savvy and political ignorance. Fair enough if you don't want to play the game, but don't sit back and pretend you don't understand it.

Jen made a few appearances contributing her motherly wisdom - some of which was actually decent advice for all Eve dismisses her. I kind of want to see Jen create and take over Eve's social media accounts. I'm sure it'd be hysterical. Burnside also appears and I'd love to learn more about her. Duncan continued to be an amusing and steadfast partner. Duncan was more outspoken in this one, more willing to stand up for his beliefs and throw his weight behind Eve to get justice the closer he gets to retirement. It made for some interesting confrontations with their fellow and superior officers.

One thing that did irritate me was the focus on food. It felt like every time anything happened they had to stop and eat and make fat jokes. And frankly the cliche of the fat cop who eats and stains all their shirts got old fast. I could've done without.

The mystery though was fantastic. The plot was fast paced and complex and had me riveted. I guessed some parts and totally missed others. Everywhere Eve stepped there were clues and crimes and I was hooked. I loved Eve's dedication to slogging through video footage and crime reports and the way she worked towards solving the case.

Another fantastic addition to the series and I can't wait to read the next one.

4 stars. ( )

This series is a guilty little pleasure of mine. Lee Goldberg knows how to spin a good yarn, and the latest Eve Ronin is no exception. Eve is still battling for acceptance after her meteoric promotion to homocide detective in the LASD, and still hasn’t learned to play nice to make friends., which explains her latest predicament. Great whirlwind of a story that will keep you hooked from beginning to end.

Thanks to Thomas & Mercer to access to a digital ARC via NetGalley.

Another enjoyable fast-paced entry in the series with crime and murder within the confines of supposedly safe gated communities. Eve's instincts are in fine form but she's still learning from Duncan, now just months away from retirement, and dealing with the enemies she's made among fellow law enforcement. The storylines are well-plotted with twists that are earned, not superficial. Goldberg's dialogue crackles with humor which is especially helpful when one of the plots involves a [trigger warning] deceased newborn. The series is also self-aware of mystery tropes with references to Duncan's concern about not surviving until retirement and a secondary character pointing out to Eve, who is about to become the subject of a fictional TV series, "I've never met anyone who talks in pretentious movie taglines the way you do." Eve has an unwavering commitment to seeing justice (or her version of it, anyway) done but isn't immune to criticism from Duncan and others who point out her failings. Skilled, but still green; determined, but sometimes wrong. Eve is smart and dedicated; human and flawed. ( )
