"[A] twisty, riveting ride." -People Magazine, People Pick "Chamberlain's evocative writing and Bennett's skilled character portrayals may cause visceral reactions in listeners, particularly during violent moments. This book tells the stories of Ellie and Kayla.

Ellie's story starts in 1965 where she is 20 years old and a college student in North Carolina. She decides to join SCOPE, an organization that canvasses neighborhoods to convince black folks to register to vote. She will live with black families while working with SCOPE. Her parents do not want her to do this but she does anyway. She meets a lot of people doing this, especially Win, and they fall in love with each other. However, Win is black and Ellie is white so they cannot act on their feelings.

Kayla's story starts in 2010 when she and her daughter move into a home she designed with her husband. Sadly, her husband passed away before they moved in so Kayla doesn't really want to be in the house. Then, weird things start happening and she begins to wonder if the house is cursed. She meets Ellie, who has moved back home to care for her mom and brother, and they form a casual friendship. After a while, Kayla finds out her dad was Ellie's boyfriend before Ellie joined SCOPE.

There is an underlying mystery to this story which is not solved until the very end. My first book by this author and I will be checking out more of her books in the future. ( )

This is probably my new favorite by this author (and that says a lot!)
I love historical fiction, and what I learn from it. In this novel, it shines a light on the 1960s and the fight for voting rights for African Americans. Told in dual timelines (1965 and 2010) it reveals the history of the new development in North Carolina where Kayla (2010) and her recently deceased husband have built their new home. As tragic as Kayla's part of the story is, the real tragedy takes place in 1965, the bulk of the story.
Ellie, a 20yo in 1965, takes a summer job to help educate the black community before President Johnson passes the Voting Rights bill. As she works to be accepted by the black families, and her black coworkers, Ellie's more determined than ever to make a difference as she slowly realizes how many of the townspeople she has known all her life are racist and hateful.
It's a must-read story that reveals a part of history still being played out today. I loved the characters, the dynamics between them, and even when I figured out who was behind the threats, still couldn't wait to hear the rest of the story to see how it all played out.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of this audiobook. The narrator did a great job with this story! ( )

Story of a white girl in North Carolina falling in love with a black man. SCOPE an organisation formed to recruit black us citizens to register to vote. It is the sixties and LBJ is about to sign a bill to allow the black us citizens to vote. A white girl joins the group and the story continues from there. I liked the twotimelines, gave a good perspective of the 1960’s and today. ( )

Very well written and enjoyed. Her use of dual timelines made the plot more suspensful and mysterious. The ending was disheartening, but, unfortunately, expected. I remanined hopeful that the end wouldn't be what I thought, maybe because I'm a hopeless romantic. But Chamberlain stayed true to historical accuracy. I couldn't imagine growing up fearing that loving a person would have fatal consequences. Here's to society ever evolving and never looking back. ( )

Kayla has just moved into her beautiful new house that she and her husband designed. She gets an uneasy feeling in the house and soon there is vandalism to her yard. The woods at the back of the property give her a creepy feeling.

1965: Ellie Hockley wants to become part of SCOPE which is a program registering black voters, against her parent's wishes. In that time, the workers are told to be very careful of a white female being seen in the south with a black male. As Ellie works with her partner, Win, a black male. They fall in love meet secretly.
This novel is like throwing a rock into a pond the ripples are far reaching and touch nearly every character in the story. ( )
