Tried to read this book, but couldn't connect with the story or characters.

A quick and interesting read, about the tension between fishermen and tourist in a small fishing town in Italy. With the fishermen advocating for a more traditional fishing village, and the tourists looking to make a profit. ( )

A fishing village in Italy is composed of a group of expatriates who interact in the lives of the locals including their politics. The village has come to depend upon the tourists who come to the village for the beach and quaint fishing village.
A dispute arises , where the fisherman want to build a breakwater so
they will not have difficulty fishing and return to the old ways of earning a living. The breakwater will stop the tourists from coming as there will no longer be a beach in Bellapalma.
This is a sociological satire of modern vs traditional way of life.

A interesting and fast read about mostly men living in a village in Italy mostly between the fishermen wanting to build a harbor for more fishing and some of the rest of the town not so because of the wonderful tourism it has. It was translated from Swedish and one of the main characters was Il Professore (he was a writer) was originally from Sweden I think along with the late author.

It was less than 150 pages and I read it in a few hours. ( )

Comedy is subjective. Not only that comedy, sometimes, does not age well. Sometimes it doesn’t translate well. Sometimes it is just a cultural thing.
Whatever the reason the comedy in this comic novel isn’t very funny.
The book concerns Norwegian expats living or visiting Italy, and the conflicts that arise.
Maybe it’s too much like Hemingway and his dislike of women. Maybe it is me. But this book just doesn’t do it. The characters, out of the Scandinavian men, are either caricatures or stereotypes, or, in particularly if female, stupid. The book didn’t grab me. And by page 80, it was a chore to read it. ( )
