Biography & Autobiography. Family & Relationships. Nonfiction. HTML:An incandescent memoir from an astonishing new talent, Beautiful Country puts readers in the shoes of an undocumented child living in poverty in the richest country in the world.

"ExtraordinaryConsider this remarkable memoir a new classic."Publishers Weekly, *Starred Review*

In Chinese, the word for America, Mei Guo, translates directly to beautiful country. Yet when seven-year-old Qian arrives in New York City in 1994 full of curiosity, she is overwhelmed by crushing fear and scarcity. In China, Qians parents were professors; in America, her family is illegal and it will require all the determination and small joys they can muster to survive.
In Chinatown, Qians parents labor in sweatshops. Instead of laughing at her jokes, they fight constantly, taking out the stress of their new life on one another. Shunned by her classmates and teachers for her limited English, Qian takes refuge in the library and masters the language through books, coming to think of The Berenstain Bears as her first American friends. And where there is delight to be found, Qian relishes it: her first bite of gloriously greasy pizza, weekly shopping days, when Qian finds small treasures in the trash lining Brooklyns streets, and a magical Christmas visit to Rockefeller Centerconfirmation that the New York City she saw in movies does exist after all.
But then Qians headstrong Ma Ma collapses, revealing an illness that she has kept secret for months for fear of the cost and scrutiny of a doctors visit. As Ba Ba retreats further inward, Qian has little to hold onto beyond his constant refrain: Whatever happens, say that you were born here, that youve always lived here.
Inhabiting her childhood perspective with exquisite lyric clarity and unforgettable charm and strength, Qian Julie Wang has penned an essential American story about a family fracturing under the weight of invisibility, and a girl coming of age in the shadows, who never stops seeking the light.

Beautiful Country is a book not easily forgotten. Qian Julie Wang"s story will resonate with many immigrates and native citizens alike. Raising yourself and parents is hard to do, but raising yourself and parents in a foreign land, going to school and trying to stay positively on the right path is even harder. This author does it all and comes out well rounded on the other side. Great and quick read, the first time and the 10th time read. ( )

Beautiful Country is a memoir of the author's life primarily between the ages of roughly 6 to 12. She writes about how difficult life was for her family living in NYC as undocumented immigrants. This is one of those stories that will stay with readers for awhile. ( )

This memoir tells the story of a child whose parents brought her to the United States at a very young age. They were undocumented, and their lives were very hard -- so hard that they twisted and fractured relationships within the family. It's vividly written, and is difficult at times to read. The "happy ending" -- the author ends up as a lawyer in her own firm -- sounds like the traditional immigrant rags-to-riches story. But the rags part is a reminder of how hard the United States can be to the non-priviliged. ( )

Maybe 3.5 stars. I wrote some notes while reading it - "Chapter One and Two, slow start, choppy"; after that, "a bit too much time spent in the bathroom - not sure of the point". I've read a lot of memoirs from everywhere over the last couple of years. I don't remember it at all, which tells me it probably wasn't very good. ( )

Wang openly relates her challenging formative years growing up in New York as an immigrant without papers. ( )

Home is that youthful region where a child is the only real living inhabitant. Parents, siblings, and neighbors are mysterious apparitions who come, go, and do strange unfathomable things in and around the child, the region’s only enfranchised citizen.
