"Nothing Ventured heralds the start of a brand new series in the style of Jeffrey Archer's #1 New York Times bestselling Clifton Chronicles: introducing Detective William Warwick. But this is not a detective story, this is a story about the making of a detective . . . William Warwick has always wanted to be a detective, and decides, much to his father's dismay, that rather than become a lawyer like his father, Sir Julian Warwick QC, and his sister Grace, he will join London's Metropolitan Police Force. After graduating from university, William begins a career that will define his life: from his early months on the beat under the watchful eye of his first mentor, Constable Fred Yates, to his first high-stakes case as a fledgling detective in Scotland Yard's arts and antiquities squad. Investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt painting from the Fitzmolean Museum, he meets Beth Rainsford, a research assistant at the gallery who he falls hopelessly in love with, even as Beth guards a secret of her own that she's terrified will come to light. While William follows the trail of the missing masterpiece, he comes up against suave art collector Miles Faulkner and his brilliant lawyer, Booth Watson QC, who are willing to bend the law to breaking point to stay one step ahead of William. Meanwhile, Miles Faulkner's wife, Christina, befriends William, but whose side is she really on? This new series introduces William Warwick, a family man and a detective who will battle throughout his career against a powerful criminal nemesis. Through twists, triumph and tragedy, this series will show that William Warwick is destined to become one of Jeffrey Archer's most enduring legacies"--… (plus d'informations)

Wow! This book deserves more than 5 stars. I have never been disappointed by a Jeffrey Archer book and this one is no exception.

He has a series of books called the Clifton Chronicles which is about the Clifton family. One of the members of the family is Harry Clifton, who is an author that writes mystery books. His mystery character is William Warwick. This book is Mr. Archer's interpretation of what Harry Clifton's book would have been.

William is a young detective working in the Arts & Antiquities section at Scotland Yard. He is brought into an investigation of a stolen Rembrandt painting. During this investigation, William meets Beth and they fall in love. Beth's father is in prison for a murdering his best friend and co-worker. William's father and sister are both lawyers and he convinces them to re-open the investigation into this matter. ( )

Nothing Ventured is a good detective story. Stolen artwork and reproductions are a very intriguing business of deception. A lot of research and time goes into finding the vandals who steal the artwork. Then time is spent building a case against the thieves by the police only to see them get off on a lie. Four stars were awarded to this book. It is very good. ( )

It's a good couple of decades since I've read a book by Jeffrey Archer. The only reason is that so very many (hundreds!) other books have ended up on my TBR, they pushed those by my favoured authors out of my mind. So I thought I'd revisit one of my erstwhile favourites with this, the first in the Detective William Warwick books.

Archer hasn't lost his knack, that's for sure. It's really well written, easy to read, totally absorbing, moves along at a cracking pace and great fun. I love that the series starts right at the beginning of Warwick's police journey. In this, we see him embark on his detective career with the arts and antiquities squad, investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt. His success no doubt will determine his future. The art interest also gifts him with his love interest, all expertly interwoven to provide an enjoyable and entertaining read. I did, in fact, guess the little twist at the end, but it still raised a smile of satisfaction.

Note to self: don't wait another twenty years to read the William Warwick #2. ( )

What a great way to start a series. This is the story of Detective William Warwick. Though there are several cases that William helps solve, it is really the story of the man that captured my attention. You can't help but fall for the Willaim. He is young and a bit naive when he starts his career, and I loved following his growth and adventures.

Read this one in one sitting. If you love a character driven story, then you need to read this one. ( )
