"In this comprehensive, inspiring, and all-too-relevant history of the Black Panther Party, Kekla Magoon introduces readers to the Panthers' community activism, grounded in the concept of self-defense, which taught Black Americans how to protect and support themselves in a country that treated them like second-class citizens. For too long the Panthers' story has been a footnote to the civil rights movement rather than what it was: a revolutionary socialist movement that drew thousands of members -- mostly women -- and became the target of one of the most sustained repression efforts ever made by the U.S. government against its own citizens. Revolution in Our Time puts the Panthers in the proper context of Black American history, from the first arrival of enslaved people to the Black Lives Matter movement of today. Kekla Magoon's eye-opening work invites a new generation of readers grappling with injustices in the United States to learn from the Panthers' history and courage, inspiring them to take their own place in the ongoing fight for justice."--… (plus d'informations)

Gr 7 Up—Through well-documented research and passionate writing, this compelling treatise tells the history of the
Black Panther Party. Magoon offers absorbing and balanced background and commentary on the party's founders,
including their principles as well as the party's policies and activities, such as providing badly needed social services
in Black communities.

In addition to being a thorough and very readable history of the Black Panther Party, Revolution in our Time provides background to the context in which this party formed. The book lays bare the truth of the violence that Black people have endured and continue to experience in America.

Revolution in our time details the work of the party to educate and empower young Black people to stand up to systemic racism. It is a detailed account of the people involved in the party and their actions for social justice. Revolution includes a full accounting of party activities including likely less well-known ones like the provision of health and social services programs. This book will go a long way to undoing the widespread misrepresentation of the legacy of the Black Panther party. ( )

In "Revolution in Our Time: The Black Panther Party's Promise to the People," young adult author Kekla Magoon offers a thoughtful and thorough look at the history of the Black Panther Party. Through compelling writing, careful research, and well-selected photographs, Magoon goes beyond the well-known (and often misconstrued) pictures from the 1960s to provide context for the Party's beginnings, tenure, and continued impact on the United States. Indeed, the book takes readers from the history of racism in slavery in the United States to the formation, heyday, and decline of the Panthers to the present day. The Panthers are too often a footnote or a brief mention in many history textbooks. Magoon's almost 400-page work seeks to fix this oversight and share with readers just how much the Panthers' platform and legacy still resonates today.

One of the greatest strengths of "Revolution in Our Time" is Magoon's willingness to examine the Black Panther Party's history. Given the renewed, and overdue, interest in racial equality that has come about with the Black Lives Matter movement and the disparities that came to light with the pandemic, it would be easy, and perhaps tempting, to write a hagiography of the Panthers by focusing on their strengths while overlooking their shortcomings. Magoon skillfully avoids this by providing a well-informed and well-rounded examination of her subjects. Even as she acknowledges the militant elements that are often emphasized, she also highlights the Party's other facets, such as the extensive free breakfast program. Additionally, she does not shy away from the contradictory views on gender that sometimes emerged from the Party. While women had leadership roles and the Panthers addressed gender equality, Magoon also writes about the sexism and gender biases that emerged.

"Revolution in Our Time" is an extraordinary, compelling, and important work, and it is a much-needed book now. ( )

This is a brilliantly laid-out and well-chronicled book about the Black Panther Party, and about the black racial and social Justice movement. I happened to receive it when my son was learning about this period of US history in middle school, and it confirmed my recommendation of this textbook; it should be in all school libraries and classrooms. It contains important American history. ( )
