The first story “Hotel Splendide” is fabulously clever. I was baffled, but she was not. Another story has a murder at a fancy-dress party, a plot device that has happened too often, but there were no costume mixups and people masquerading as someone else, so the story was fresh and the motive complex. I love Phryne Fisher. I love the books. I love the TV show. I love the movie. I love the new TV show. I love the short stories. I love The Lady with the Gun Asks the Questions. If you like clever mysteries that rely on a keen understanding of human behavior and a nose for clues, you will like this collection of short stories. Most of these stories were reissued from an earlier edition. I’d read them years ago, but I’d forgotten most of the solutions, so I had the pleasure of puzzling out the mysteries again. There were very few surprises, but I enjoyed the visit with familiar characters. There’s a fun addition of a glossary of terms at the end of this book; 1920’s vocab and Aussie slang. I was still left with a question about a ‘jazz colored’ wall. That one sent me to google to solve my own small mystery. (
