Fiction. Mystery. Historical Fiction. HTML:Georgie is back and hanging the stockings with care when a murder interrupts her Christmas cheer in this all-new installment in the New York Times bestselling Royal Spyness series from Rhys Bowen.
Georgie is excited for her first Christmas as a married woman in her lovely new home. She suggests to her dashing husband, Darcy, that they have a little house party, but when Darcy receives a letter from his aunt Ermintrude, there is an abrupt change in plans. She has moved to a house on the edge of the Sandringham estate, near the royal family, and wants to invite Darcy and his new bride for Christmas. Aunt Ermintrude hints that the queen would like Georgie nearby. Georgie had not known that Aunt Ermintrude was a former lady-in-waiting and close confidante of her royal highness. The letter is therefore almost a royal request, so Georgie, Darcy, and their Christmas guests: Mummy, Grandad, Fig, and Binky all head to Sandringham.
Georgie soon learns that the notorious Mrs. Simpson, mistress to the Prince of Wales, will also be in attendance. It is now crystal clear to Georgie that the Queen expects her to do a bit of spying. There is tension in the air from the get-go, and when Georgie pays a visit to the queen, she learns that there is more to her request than just some simple eavesdropping. There have been a couple of strange accidents at the estate recently. Two gentlemen of the royal household have died in mysterious circumstances and another has been shot by mistake during a hunt. Georgie begins to suspect that a member of the royal family is the real target but her investigation will put her new husband and love of her life, Darcy, in the crosshairs of a killer.

Christmas with royalty for Lady Georgie turns out to be as dangerous as it is festive. Who is killing off the Prince's gentlemen, and why? Serious undertones of the imminent WW2 and Wallis Simpson scandal color the landscape awkwardly during her and Darcy's investigations. ( )

The second Christmas installment of the series sees the married Lady Georgianna summoned to spend Christmas with Darcy's Aunt Ermintrude at the country estate of the royal family. the trip is plagued with an accident involving Mrs Simpson and two other men are murdered.

What to say? This is one of Bowen’s books that has layers. On the one hand, it’s very Christmassy, so it ticks that box; on the other hand, I was ready to say that the mystery really wasn’t much of a mystery.

The first half of the book focuses on Christmas at Sandringham, with casual mentions of accidental deaths that took place the year before on Boxing day. Another death occurs half-way through the book that smacks of accidental death, even though readers know it won’t be. But it’s not until the final 25% that the story gets really interesting. The author takes the story in a direction I wouldn’t have said most cozy writers had the courage to go, and ends it in much the same way. I liked it, and it bumped my rating .5 star.

It might have been a higher rating but the book wraps up with cliched character development. I suppose it’s part of the natural order of things for most people, but I’ve rarely read murder mysteries that make procreation work to the advantage of the series. I say rarely, but I can’t think of one mystery series that brought babies into the mix that I can do more than tolerate.

The author, as usual, involves a note at the end, detailing the parts of the story that are historically accurate and the parts where she mixed the real people with fictional events – I always appreciate these clarifications, because sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. ( )

The latest installment in Bowen’s Royal Spyness series. Finds Georgie trying to host her first Christmas as a married woman (can it really be less than six months since she & Darcy tied the know?) But when Darcy receives a letter from his Aunt Ermintrude the house party moves en masse to Sandringham where Ermintrude lives in a grace and favor house on the Royal estate. And of course when two gentlemen of the Royal household turn up dead, Georgie and Darcy are on the case.

Lots of fun and the news at the end of the book means that the next installment should really be full of surprises. ( )

“ ‘Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat, please to put a penny in the old man’s hat,’ ” sang my housemaid, Sally, in a high, sweet voice as she brandished the feather duster over the portraits in the long gallery.
