I have been patiently awaiting the release of this book ever since I saw the teaser for it. I was a little nervous to see how Laurenston would continue the series considering the youngest MacKilligan sister is the 17-year-old Natalie Malone. Imagine my happiness when I realized the book followed one of Max MacKilligan’s basketball teammates instead. While waiting for this book to come out, I read the rest of the Pride series, so I was ready for those characters to make appearances in this book (which they did!).

The story switches between the points of view of Finn Malone (Natalie Malone’s half-brother) and Mads Galendotter. The romance between them happens about three-quarters of the way through because the focus of the story is solving the murder of Finn’s father. When the story finishes, we’re closer to finding out who killed him, but we haven’t solved the case, which opens the door for subsequent books (perhaps involving the remaining three Malone brothers?).

This was another zany adventure starring honey badger shifters and tiger shifters and a few other shifters too. Mads Galensdotter is a honey badger/hyena mix who is despised by her hyena family. Only her grandmother Solveig who sees herself as a Viking was ever kind to her in a honey badger sort of way. When she meets a bunch of other honey badgers including Max MacKilligan on the bus on the way to middle school, she finds her real family - though, being honey badgers, they don't want to admit it. There friendship grew and Mads love of basketball was the centerpiece.

Now grown, they are on their way to the championships of the shifter basketball league. But that doesn't stop them from getting involved in other ventures. The story in the present begins with them on an island off New York and under attack for some unknown reason. There they meet the black Malones - tiger shifters - who are looking for clues to the person who murdered their father. The Malones save the honey badgers when their evac team disappears. But when Max goes to bring them muffins and thank them, they are thrown out of the tigers' house. Then the tigers find out that Max might be the key to getting information about their father's death...

Between basketball playoffs, football practices, attacks from Mads' relatives, kidnappings and various other events, Finn Malone and Mads fall in love.

The story was action-packed and filled with snarky banter. There were lots of appearances from other characters who have appeared in other books by Laurenston. In fact, there were so many plot threads and appearances that the romance really took a back seat and seemed almost like an afterthought. Still it was a very enjoyable story especially for those who have read other of Laurenston's books and want another look at some favorite characters from earlier stories. ( )

OKAY, WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK COMING OUT??? I can't believe that I just finished this book and I want the next one. It is probably because not all of our questions are answered, so we need the next darn book...as a matter of fact, not all of our questions have been answered from the first three books! Is this some sort of evil test on behalf of the author???

The first three books in this new series have dealt with the MacKilligan sisters (there were only three until a new one showed up, and boy, oh boy, she really does have her father's screwed up genes! You'll see!).

This next part of the series will be about the Malone brothers (Siberian Tigers) and the friends of Max (one of the MacKilligan sisters). Unfortunately, we don't get to see much of the sisters' new lovers, but we do get a very healthy dose of the girls, and I loved that.

This book CAN be read as a stand-alone since it does have a goodly amount of backstory. We have a wonderful mystery, a slow-burning affair, and more with the baking for the neighborhood bears. We also learn a lot about Max's friends and teammates, and wow, they are something. I will admit that while the loves scenes are HOT-there really is only one full-length one. This book, the whole series, has more to do with mysteries and fighting than romance.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that really loves kick-ass women and the men who lust after them.
