"I found The Between dark, super creepy, and pushing the limits of my limited amounts of courage to explore--but I couldn't stop myself from coming back for more because it's propulsive, addictive, and scary good fun." - Sean Gibson, author of The Stuff About the Dragon Was (Mostly) True While landscaping his backyard, ever-conscientious Paul Prentice discovers an iron door buried in the soil. His childhood friend and perpetual source of mischief, Jay Lightsey, pushes them to explore what's beneath. When the door slams shut above them, Paul and Jay are trapped in a between-worlds place of Escher-like rooms and horror story monsters, all with a mysterious connection to a command-line, dungeon explorer computer game from the early '80s called The Between. Unlike their childhood gaming, these men are facing life-and-death challenges; tensions rise between Jay and Paul as they encounter stranger things in each room, and their experience in arcade games and role-playing aren't enough to keep their partnership intact. Paul and Jay find themselves filling roles in a story that seems to play out over and over again. But in this world, where their roles warp their minds, the biggest threat to survival may not be the legendary monster Koŝmaro, risen from the Between's depths to hunt them; the biggest danger may be each other. Fans of The Goonies, Stranger Things, The Last Starfighter and Ready, Player One will thrill at the horror, adventure and humor that await them in The Between. "The book draws you in from the word "go" and you will feel as sucked into the world Ryan Leslie created as the characters do. A thrilling, psychological ride from start to finish." - Author Lindsay Leslie "While in the first third of this book, I mentioned that the atmosphere reminded me of one of my favorite horror novels, SL Grey's The Mall. There's a surreal, not-right quality to that book that touched off a nerve in me that I just adored....I don't at all mean this as an insult, as that's a damn fun book- and so is this one! ....It's almost like a grown up, more gory and violent horror version of Heir Apparent." - Alexandra, Goodreads "This debut novel by author Ryan Leslie combines elements of science fiction and horror that at times reminded me of The Hike by Drew Magary and Off To Be The Wizard by Scott Meyer, all while being something distinctly different." - Matt, Goodreads "It was a great mix of horror, sci-fi and adventure gaming!" - Stephanie, Goodreads… (plus d'informations)

The Between is a story of a nightmarish video game come to life.
When Paul Prentice decided to landscape his yard instead of hiring a professional to do it, he never imagined finding a mysterious iron door beneath all of the dirt. His best friend Jay Lightsey encourages the two of them to open the door and go below the surface, living up to his reputation as a troublemaker (one he has had since he and Paul met in second grade). They enter into a space that is full of monsters and mind tricks, with no real way out. As they make their way through the confusing maze of rooms and challenges. Before they know it, they have started to play the roles of a game that they aren't aware of. Unfortunately for these best friends, the roles they are cast in may, ultimately, be the cause of their demise.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this book. I'm a fan of the sort of "classic" horror vibes that ran as an undercurrent throughout the plot and the cover of this book... I mean it's just perfect. I got very strong Stranger Things and AHS 1984 vibes the entire time I was reading. One of my other favorite things about this book was the character, Supriya. She's a badass Osteogenic Sarcoma cancer survivor with a prosthesis. As someone who went through cancer/chemotherapy very young, it was such a good thing to have a moment of representation with her character. My only complaint was a few plot holes, which were honestly few and far between. I found it difficult to contextualize and understand a few of the flashbacks. Other than that, I really liked the cliffhanger and wanted to see more. I was left wanting to read more by Ryan Leslie, I was excited to learn that he has another book coming out next year.

Overall rating: 4.5/5 (rounded up to 5)

I started reading this and was immediately thrown off by a conversation between the main character and his wife that I found completely unbelievable. It's a shame, because I was really intrigued by the premise. I may give it another shot at a later date, but for now this is a Did Not Finish.

I received a free copy of The Between by Ryan Leslie from The Parliament House in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed The Between. This debut novel by author Ryan Leslie combines elements of science fiction and horror that at times resembles The Hike by Drew Magary and Off To Be The Wizard by Scott Meyer all while being something distinctly different. I enjoyed the world building and conceptual framework employed by Leslie throughout the book, as well as the delightful moments of fear and tension woven into the narrative. While there was much to be enjoyed, this book is not without some issues. The characters seemed juvenile and unbelievable at first, though over time they grew on me and I became invested in them. There were also some elements in the book that I felt were not adequately explained or resolved, and the plot as a whole stuck me as being a bit off. Toward the middle (actually, maybe more like 1/3rd) of the book a major problem seemed to be resolved, and the decisions the characters made next seemed...insufficiently motivated to be believed. Nevertheless, I enjoyed everything that happened in the plot, but this slightly disjointed plotting clearly betrayed that this work is a debut. I don't know if Leslie will write a sequel to this book or not, but if he did I'd probably read it. I want to know more about this world he's created and what happens next for the protagonist. ( )
