Memoirs of a Jew who was born in Stuttgart in 1923 and grew up in Ellingen. Pt. 1 (pp. 17-109) contains, inter alia, descriptions of antisemitic incidents in Ellingen in the early 1930s. In 1935 she, her parents, and brother emigrated to Eretz Israel, where her father, Meyer Schuster, attempted to help their many relatives emigrate as well. With all his efforts thwarted, he left for Cuba in 1937, and the family followed in 1939. Pt. 3 (pp. 147-217) describes, inter alia, Schuster's rescue activities in Cuba, which included making a deal with authorities to allow Jews to enter the country for a price. Through this agreement, and with the help of the Joint Distribution Committee, Schuster was able to save many Jews, mostly from Germany. In 1939 the Jews on the "St. Louis" were refused landing permits by President Laredo Bru due to a power struggle with Batista which was taking place at the time. After this incident rescue work in Cuba became much more difficult, and the Schusters left for the U.S. Most of their relatives perished in the Holocaust.
