A good read about a young girl and her recruitment as a for bunny at the Lake Geneva Playboy resort in Wisconsin. Sex, drugs, and maybe rock & roll add to the enticement of this naive young woman. The book also looks at how it affects her the rest of her life. An easy read, but well worth your time. ( ) I've been super picky with my historical fiction recently, but sometimes I find the good ones and the good ones are absolutely amazing. The aspect I loved most about this book was the self-confidence aspect. There is a certain amount of empowerment that comes from looking good and knowing it, and this embraces that instead of shaming it. It never ever shames working as a Playboy bunny or working as a stripper, while it also highlights how this work could be problematic through the way Sherri's experience ends. I loved the boys in this book. It's not super romantic and doesn't focused on a love story, but all the same I felt like I could put myself in Sherri's shoes in how she interacted with the male love interests and the way she fell so quickly and built worlds around each while being initially blind to flaws. Other side characters also rung true--Jerry's role felt so minor at first but it was fascinating how he continued to pop up, and the evolution of Sherri's relationship with Raylee was also poignant. Clancy has written a well-rounded novel with lots of relevant details, a setting that feels both quaint and confining, and characters that fit together like puzzle pieces. Well, this isn't the great American novel, but it's not horrible. I like that it's an author that lives in state, that writes about the history of the local area, but the story itself is pretty shallow. It bills itself as a "coming-of-age" story about a young woman, begins with a present-day lookback, spends most of it's time in the past (where the young woman makes some astonishingly bad decisions over and over...), then jumps back to the present to neatly tie up all the loose ends. There were times I felt like the author was including local details so that she could say she included local details - it felt contrived. But kudos to Clancy for doing her research and including legit details about the life her protagonist finds herself living. I can't help wishing Clancy would write some non-fiction about this area of the state. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
"A dazzling portrait of a young woman coming into her own, the youthful allure of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and what we lose-and gain-when we leave home. The small town of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is an unlikely location for a Playboy Resort, and nineteen-year old Sherri Taylor is an unlikely bunny. Growing up in neighboring East Troy, Sherri plays the organ at the local church and has never felt comfortable in her own skin. But when her parents die in quick succession, she leaves the only home she's ever known for the chance to be part of a glamorous slice of history. In the winter of 1981, in a costume two sizes too small, her toes pinched by stilettos, Sherri joins the daughters of dairy farmers and factory workers for the defining experience of her life. Living in the "bunny hutch"-Playboy's version of a college dorm-Sherri gets her education in the joys of sisterhood, the thrill of financial independence, the magic of first love, and the heady effects of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. But as spring gives way to summer, Sherri finds herself caught in a romantic triangle-and the tragedy that ensues will haunt her for the next forty years. From the Midwestern prairie to the California desert, from Wisconsin lakes to the Pacific Ocean, this is a story of what happens when small town life is sprinkled with stardust, and what we lose-and gain-when we leave home. With a heroine to root for and a narrative to get lost in, Christina Clancy's Shoulder Season is a sexy, evocative tale, drenched in longing and desire, that captures a fleeting moment in American history with nostalgia and heart"-- Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
