The New Map: Energy, Climate, and the Clash of Nations par Daniel Yergin

Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth par Rachel Maddow (M_Clark)
M_Clark: Rachel Maddow's book provides a useful accompaniment to the Yergin book by describing a lot of the corruption involved in the oil and gas industries. Her discussion of the development of fracking in Oklahoma is much better and more complete than what is contained in the Yergin book.… (plus d'informations)

I found the historical sections the most interesting. I've lived through the more recent geopolitics, which made that part feel like a rehashing of recent headlines. OTOH, this was an informative, comprehensive overview of important topics and how the world has gotten to where it is. ( )

Daniel Yergin's book, "The New Map" is a wide ranging look at energy around the world in 2020. He covers the capacities, reserves, and economic impacts of shale oil, shale gas, fracking, wind, solar, and the further transition to green energy such as use of carbon capture and self-driving cars. He also looks at the challenges the U.S. and other countries and major regions are facing. ( )

Daniel Yergin's latest book brings his classic history of the oil industry up to date. He begins with the story of the development of the US shale oil and natural gas industries during the past few decades which allowed the US to move from being a net importer to being a significant exporter of oil and gas. He then talks about the changes in oil demand resulting from the competition with gas, alternate energy sources, and the corona virus. All of this had major geopolitical implications. Yergin evaluates the implications for Russia, China, Europe and the Middle East, with a particularly useful summary of the what is at stake in the South China Sea. His book concludes with a look at the changes occurring in the auto industry and as a result of climate changes. In summary, the book is a useful summary of current trends in the oil industry and geopolitics written in the style of a consultant presenting to an international oil conference. ( )

A fuller review will be forthcoming, but my low rating for this book is based on its exposition of a neoliberal politics that largely ignores the devastating effects of U.S. military, political, economic, and covert-action intervention in the lesser-developed countries of the world. ( )
