This is a thoroughly compelling read and had me engaged from the first page. Moore has captured the mother's changing mood, loss of memory and erratic behaviour extremely well as she loses her battle against Alzheimer's. Fourteen year-old Sylvie is also a believable, and very likeable, character. The reader can only empathise with Sylvie as she struggles with her fears, confusion, anger and her fierce need to protect the mother who is becoming unrecognisable. Sylvie finds herself becoming the adult in the relationship and is responsible not only for her mother, but also the general everyday running of the household, as well as trying to cope with school, friends and music. Unfortunately, there is no happy ending to this book but it is a touching read and a great introduction to Alzheimer's. ( )
