Very well written but with relatively small detail on the grand affairs of the Civil War. If you're going to read this, get yourself a good atlas and use it to follow troop movements, battle sites etc. ( ) Read during and just after our trip of the great Civil War battles and this book ends at Vicksburg where our battle sites also ended. An unusual book. Very well written but with relatively small detail on the grand affairs of the Civil War but great detail on the minutiae of the events Grant was involved in. His paths and ours crossed at Fort Donelson and Vicksburg which was very interesting. A valuable book for those interested in this very interesting, and quite compelling, time/ aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Among the autobiographies of generals and statesmen, these memoirs rank with the greatest. Mark Twain hailed them as "the best of any general's since Caesar." Refreshingly candid and honest, Grant's assessment of his humble beginnings, his rise to fame, and his greatest triumphs and failures has become an American classic.
