I liked the hero vs. villain aspects of this book and the action sequences are always great in a Salvatore book. For me, this didn't have the quality or depth of his earlier Drizzt novels, but it was still very enjoyable. (

This book certainly brings together plenty of grand adventure, with a steam-breathing giant turtle, a dragon, a demon, a mine full of dwarves, a good wizard, a bad wizard, and lots of elves and cyclops, a perfect adventure for a young renegade princeling and a rogue bandit. I was not fond of the over-detailed play by play battle scenes, and the adventure may have been more effective with more development, tighter editing, and fewer fantasy elements, but for a fast-reading pulp fantasy novel this one was not bad. The plot was laid out smoothly and was well paced, and the story was easy enough to follow even with all the complicated twists and flourishes. (
