This is Book 5 in the series about Zack Blake, lawyer extraordinaire. In this book, Kenny and Jake, Zack’s stepsons, are headed to school to take final exams. Sadly, a troubled teen, Kevin Burns, who has been bullied at school, decides to take matters in his own hands and takes guns to school, planning to shoot as many students and teachers as he can. After the deadly shooting, Zack is asked to represent the victims against the shooter, the school, and the arms manufacturer, Barrington Arms. Additionally, there is a political bent to this incident, as the US president is heavily connected to Barrington Arms, and he and the US Attorney General want to exact revenge on Zack Blake for retribution for an earlier case.
I would have preferred this story to focus on the high school shooting and the families affected by this terrible event. I know that the addition of the political angle is important in light of our current political nightmare, but I thought that took the story off on a tangent. However, having said that, I would love to see the conclusion presented in this book to also play out in our real world, but sadly I don’t think any of the complicit group in congress will step up and do the right thing, as evidenced by the ludicrous handling of the impeachment “trial” in the Senate. So for now, I will have to be content with hoping it were so, and justice served as it is in the novels set forth in the capable hands of Mark M. Bello.
