It's nothing earth-shattering, simply a continuation of the previous books, but the characters are sympathetic and the plot satisfactory. Not something you should read if you want something substantial, but absolutely fine if you want something easy and romantic to curl up with on the couch. Of the three books in this series, The Pagan Stone was better written and had a tighter plot line. Nora Roberts is one of the better pulp fiction writers. Given that, I found the plot a bit thin, as the story was mildly compelling and, at times, predictable. After reading the first few chapters of the first novel, most readers will figure out what the other two novels will be about and what the outcome of this war with the evil entity. The only question is how, and even that becomes transparent into the first few chapters of The Pagan Stone. My biggest beef with Nora Roberts is her character's dialog. No one speaks like these characters do, constant wise cracks, trite remarks, and flippant responses even during the love scenes. My second biggest beef with this author is her love scenes which vacillate from clinical to whimsical. Rarely does one find any romance, although she does a better job of it in The Pagan Stone than in the other two books. Literature, this is not. The writing is entertaining in small doses and if you have time to kill, The Pagan Stone is a easy read. I read this book because I came to work one day and mentioned I had forgotten to bring my book for lunch and my co-worker gave me this one to read as she had just finished it. That explains why I did not read books 1 and 2 of this trilogy. That DOESN'T explain why I won't read books 1 and 2 of this trilogy. I had never read a Nora Roberts book before. Maybe this wasn't the one to start with. I have barely heard of her. I'm not a romance reader and I think that's her main genre. I was fairly amused by the book - everyone is good looking (of course!) and everyone has wonderful, mind-blowing sex right before being attacked by demons, after which everyone goes back to having wonderful, mind-blowing sex. Okay, I don't read books quite like this that often so I was having fun with that. Personally, after the first demon attack, I'd just get out of town. But there wouldn't be a book, would there? The horror part was pretty mild. This is mainly a romance with a bit of a horror twist. I prefer my horror to be truly awful horror - I expect everyone to die some twisted, painful death in the end. I wasn't engrossed in this story (or the characters) to pursue the other 2 books in this trilogy. I actually did not care much for Cybil. Everyone was so chummy, buddy-buddy, friends for life in this book and I am a bit more cynical than that. It wasn't my type of book so a bit hard for me to objectively review it. I passed this book on to another co-worker. It's been well read. It had 2 different thrift store tags on it and also another label saying it belonged to some hotel so don't remove it. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
