Actors Tucker and Eikenberry, having sent their last child off to college, were vacationing in Italy when they happened upon a small cottage nestled in the Umbrian countryside. The 350-year-old rustico sat perched on a hill in the verdant Spoleto valley amid an olive grove and fruit trees of every kind. It was literally love at first sight, and the couple purchased the house without testing the water pressure or checking for termites. Shedding the vestiges of their American life, Michael and Jill endeavored to learn the language, understand the nuances of Italian culture, and build a home in this new chapter of their lives. Both a celebration of a good marriage and a careful study of the nature of home, this book is a travelogue written with an epicurean's delight in detail and a gourmand's appreciation for all things fine.--From publisher description.… (plus d'informations)

Wonderful memoir of food, wine, and love in Italy. Tucker writes in a style that is reminiscent of Peter Mayle ... but not quite as funny, and with much more focus on FOOD. ( )

What was with this ending? Did M. Tucker have to rush this off to print to get some more money? These people seem really insular and selfish. "Our little orphan" is so condescending. Caroline was lucky to get out when she did. I liked the food descriptions but didn't like Mike and Jill. I wouldn't have a meal with them.

Michael Tucker’s description of his move to Italy has a similar feel to Peter Mayle’s stories about France. Both go through the fish out of water phase, adjusting to the pace, learning the language, and thoroughly enjoying the food. It is a very pleasant read about Italy and about a couple that is very much in love.
