Fantasy. Fiction. HTML:Discover the early history of Raistlin Majere, one of Dragonlance's most complicated yet beloved characters, in this prequel to the wildly popular Chronicles and Legends trilogies

A mage's soul is forged in the crucible of magic.

Raistlin Majere is six years old when he meets an archmage who enrolls him in a school for the study of magic. Weak and frail, and tormented by jealousy and inadequacy compared to his twin brother Caramon, the gifted boy begins to forge his wizarding skills. But shadows are darkening over Raistlin even as the same shadows lengthen over all of Ansalon.

As Raistlin's wizarding apprenticeship draws nearer to the end, he must first take the Dread Test in the Tower of High Sorcery. It will change his life forever.

The Soulforge is the first of two novels in The Raistlin Chronicles series, followed by Brothers in Arms.

For several years now I've believed Fantasy had lost its allure for me. I am so pleasantly surprised that the world of Dragonlance is as appealing now as it was in my twenties. I intend to read the original Chronicles again, but the library wait is a long one, so I turned to this "prequel."

Soulforge was even more satisfying than I'd hoped it would be! Raistlin is as interesting as I remembered, and Tas the Kender remains one of my most favorite literary characters. I am looking forward to a long stay on Krynn. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great story, and the coda at the end really gave me a big smile. I only ding it one star because some of the references to other books (Drangonlance Chronicles and Legends) and characters were a bit heavy-handed and clunky at times. As important as these references may have been, I didn't need to be reminded over and over that certain characters (who played no part in this story) were around town, just doing their thing. Obviously you shouldn't read this book without reading the first six of the origin two trilogies. If you do , you will still enjoy it, but many of the references will go over your head. ( )

This is my favorite book in the Dragonlance series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. When I ventured to Solace for the first time, Raistlin had me. I was very curious to learn more about this complex character. I love Raistlin and credit him for my growing fond of/loving Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series. ( )

This was my absolute favorite Dragonlance book- here is where we learn the past of one of Dragonlance's most intriguing (not to mention popular) characters. I actually wrote a paper on this one (not easy to do with a fantasy book). Anyway, this is written by Dragonlance's best author in a very in-depth way that really explains Raistlin's character. If you read Dragonlance, read this one. ( )

The alloys produced by early iron workers . . . were made by heating a mass of iron ore and charcoal in a forge or furnace having a forced draft. Under this treatment, the ore was reduced to the sponge of metallic iron filled with a slag composed of metallic impurities and charcoal ash. This sponge of iron was removed from the furnace while still incandescent and beaten with heavy sledges to drive out the slag and to weld and consolidate the iron. . . . Occasionally this technique of ironmaking produced, by accident, a true steel . . .¹
