Biography & Autobiography. Performing Arts. Nonfiction. Humor (Nonfiction.) HTML:The first book in twenty-five years from "one of our great comic minds" (The Washington Post) features Seinfeld's best work across five decades in comedy.
Since his first performance at the legendary New York nightclub "Catch a Rising Star" as a twenty-one-year-old college student in fall of 1975, Jerry Seinfeld has written his own material and saved everything. "Whenever I came up with a funny bit, whether it happened on a stage, in a conversation, or working it out on my preferred canvas, the big yellow legal pad, I kept it in one of those old school accordion folders," Seinfeld writes. "So I have everything I thought was worth saving from forty-five years of hacking away at this for all I was worth."

For this book, Jerry Seinfeld has selected his favorite material, organized decade by decade. In this "trove of laugh-out-loud one-liners" (Associated Press), you will witness the evolution of one of the great comedians of our time and gain new insights into the thrilling but unforgiving art of writing stand-up comedy.

Funny but not so funny in a book or audio book form. Compediam of old material. ( )

99% of this book are his old bits, most of which I've heard. Reading them on the page renders them flat unless you actively try to channel his delivery. Maybe this would be good as an audio book with him narrating but as a physical book, it's a disappointment and ends up feeling like he's just trying to cash in. ( )

I'm a big fan of Jerry Seinfeld's. I loved the Seinfeld show, and I've enjoyed all of his stand-up specials. So when I heard him interviewed on a recent podcast, I knew I had to pick up this book. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I certainly wasn't disappointed!

Jerry's wry, sardonic tone comes across beautifully in his writing. The non-traditional structure of the paragraphs (sentences that end abruptly and then continue on the following line, for example) makes for fast, easy reading. Experiencing Seinfeld's comedy in this way is the next best thing to being in the audience at one of his shows.

I laughed out loud countless times, and since I read in bed, I woke up my husband more than once with a loud guffaw I just couldn't contain. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Seinfeld's brand of comedy and wants an inside look into the mind of a man who loves stand-up more than (almost) anything else. ( )

A disjointed collection of bits by Jerry Seinfeld.

It's like reading through a collection of a comedian's notes, many bits that didn't make it to something interesting, and ended their life as short one-sentence observations, a few that were turned into something good.

I'd recommend just watching his shows. That way, you get the finished bits, worked together into a coherent whole. The unfinished bits weren't performed for a reason. ( )

Seems to have Jerry's entire arsenal of jokes. Unfortunately, a lot of them that would be funny in a comedy club, fall kind of flat on paper. ( )
