"A smartly dressed man has been found unconscious at the local racecourse and is rushed to the hospital, where he subsequently dies. But who is he? Where does he come from? He had no form of identification on him, and no one claims the body. Doctor Chris Rankin, a specialist who treated the deceased--and who struggles with mental health issues--is intrigued by the nameless dead man, obsessed even, and starts asking questions. However, someone doesn't want the questions answered and will go to any lengths to prevent it, including an attempted murder. But when no one will believe that someone tried to kill Chris, the doctor is left with no option but to discover who the nameless man was and why he died. preferably before following him into an early grave"--… (plus d'informations)

It was nice to read a Francis novel with a female protagonist for a change. In all the other books I've read by this author, women have played fairly minor roles, so it was a pleasant surprise to discover the gender of Doctor Chris Rankin, who I had presumed was a male. However, I think I would have liked her better had she been a stronger character, not one who struggled with eating disorders and anxiety.

The second half of this novel was definitely better than the first but, I have to say, "Pulse" was definitely not one of my preferred books by this author. ( )

Felix Francis is following the track his dad, [a:Dick Francis|5561|Dick Francis|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1208830270p2/5561.jpg] made, but in Pulse he's moving, slightly, to new areas. The book still takes place in the horse racing world in England, of course, but the protagonist is female. Since the books are written in first person, that can't have come natural.

The female protagonist also suffers from medical problems that are quite gender specific. That is a thin ice to enter for a male author and I don't know if he pulled it off. Seriously, I don't know.

As a thriller it's working. A man dies at a racing course, the police thinks it's suicide or an accident but Doctor Chris is convinced there is more to it. ( )

Read this review for a peak into what I’d felt about this novel, as well.

3 stars, and not really recommended. ( )

First ever Francis book with a female protaganist. A decent enough thriller and readable as they always are. Kudos for trying a female lead and one with mental illness even if the (supposed) reason for the mental illness made me roll my eyes. ( )

Felix Francis is carrying on in his father’s footsteps. A good read, set in the racing world. In this case, the protagonist’s connection to that world is distant and only becomes apparent as time goes on ( )
