Let's Never Talk About This Again really hits home, although my own upbringing was different. I felt so many emotions throughout the book - happy, sad, sympathetic awkwardness, devastation and more. The author does not sugar coat the reality of Alzheimer's and Dementia. Above all, this book is funny! Not weird funny but laugh out loud relatable funny. Highly recommend. A memoir which alternates between hilarity and deep sadness as Alterman tells the story of the deep bond she shared with the father she adored and her shock and confusion at learning he had been an author of funny, porno "self-help" books. She shares how this knowledge affected her teenage and young adult dating years, with stories that are both appalling and funny at the same time. There is almost a kind of happily-ever-after conclusion when, into her late twenties, she finally meets and marries Sam, but then the story takes a much darker turn when her father, Ira, begins acting strangely and is diagnosed with Alzheimer's and begins a rapid downward spiral into madness. I chuckled and laughed initially, but then, well, much to think about here. My daughter, about the same age as the author, gifted me this book for Father's Day. Hmm ... LET'S NEVER TALK ABOUT THIS AGAIN okay, Suzie? (But I'm leaving you the "family business.") Very highly recommended. - Tim Bazzett, author of the memoir, BOOKLOVER aucune critique | ajouter une critique
"Sara was at the tender age of 12 when she found the skeleton in her prudish parents' closet: a series of novelty sex books crammed high up on a shelf in her childhood living room, all written by Sara's ordinary suburban dad, Ira. For decades the books were an unspoken secret in Sara's family until Ira developed early onset Alzheimer's disease...and announced he'd be reviving his novelty porn career. With Sara's help. In this cringe-worthy, unique, moving memoir--based on her New York Times piece--Sara shares the profound loss of the father she knew and loved as she attempts desperately to welcome the pervy neurological stranger who has taken his place. As heartwarming as it is heartbreaking, Let's Never Talk About This Again is a must-read confessional from a woman who spent years trying to find humor in the perverse and optimism in the darkness, and succeeded"-- Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

#FirstLine ~ The most important room in my childhood home was covered in ducks; a first-floor den we called the Duck Room.
I admire anyone who can expose themselves and become vulnerable to the public by sharing their story, so others can learn or so they don't feel so alone in this big old world! I loved this memoir because not only was it honest, but it was also funny, raw, and engaging. It was brilliant and I really appreciate the fact that it was shared out for all of us to enjoy. ( )
