This is the second novel in the Harriet Gordon series and while I enjoyed it, I didn't think it was good as "Singapore Sapphire". I missed Harriet's strong involvement in solving the crime and she and Curran didn't spend as much time together as they did in the first book. Also, I thought the ending was rather flat. However, I intend to continue the series and hope the instalment doesn't disappoint. ( )

My issues with this one remain the same as the first, but I realise after some thought, that I am the victim of the romantic tension trope. Possibly a willing victim, as it turns out. I understand that Stuart is bucking the trope by having the two MCs not being romantically available to each other, but alas, I don’t like it. It feels like something is missing, in spite of my not being a fan of romances. Given the time period these are set in, and the general attitude of society that a man and a woman can’t really be partners and bond on any level other than romantically – and should they try everybody accuses them of being romantically involved anyway, I can’t see this going anywhere that isn’t going to irritate me.

Still, the mysteries are good, and the Singapore setting is threatening to become trendy. The characters are growing on me in spite of the lack of oomph. The plotting is intricate enough, though one scene gave away the villain just a few pages before the big reveal.

I’ll definitely read a third one and who knows, maybe the character dynamics will go somewhere interesting without all the silly angst. ( )

Revenge in Rubies is the second in the Harriet Gordon mystery series and opens about 6 months after the end of the first book. The setting is Singapore in 1910. Harriet receives a note from her friend Priscilla Nolan asking Harriet to come at once to help her cope with what she calls a terrible accident. Priscilla's sister-in-law has been murdered in the night. Since Harriet has been working as a typist for the local police she manages to get involved with the investigation. Both Harriet and the police detective, Curran, have painful secrets in their pasts which events drag up. The murdered woman is the wife of the Colonel in charge of the British troops assigned to Singapore which greatly complicates the situation. I enjoyed this book and would recommend the series for those who like historical mysteries.

1910 Singapore. Inspector Robert Curran is called in to investigate the death of Sylvie Nolan, the new and much younger wife of Lt. Colonel John Nolan. Mrs Harriet Gordon becomes involved as she is friend to his sister Priscilla Nolan. But what could possibly be the motive of someone who was so well liked. But then another murder occurs. What is the possible connection between the deaths, will this be the last one.
An entertaining well-written historical mystery, with its cast of well-developed characters. A story which can easily be read as a standalone book
An ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
