Given that Williams' book was lauded as a "clever delight for language lovers," I was looking forward to this literary adventure. For inexplicable reasons, it just didn't "click" with me. Granted, there are many laugh-out-loud encounters. Also, the book's format — fittingly organized alphabetically — is inventive. Finally, Williams is a skilled word merchant. But I just couldn't get into the characters or the plot. In fact, I almost stopped reading it a couple times and probably would have given up if it hadn't been such a slim volume. ( )

Fun read if you like ‚words‘. ( )

This book is adorable! Yes, it does sometimes cross the line into twee, but I enjoyed it anyway. The wordplay was so much fun and the characters were loveable. The dual timeline structure worked and I felt like the storylines were balanced. ( )

It took some time for me to "get" what was going on in this story. Still an interesting read especially for any word birds. ( )

“The Liar’s Dictionary” is a funny book about words, meaning, and who gets to define things. Sounds dry but it is absolutely the opposite. The book alternates between our present day narrator Mallory and Winceworth, a lexicographer from around 100 years earlier. The present day story is about the efforts to clean up a complete dictionary of the English language produced in the early 20th Century. It was never finished and the heir to the family who shepherded it into existence wants to finish and digitize the results. Mallory ends up discovering many false entries in the book and the flashback segment shows us how those came to be. The back and forth is really inventive and the made up words are really inventive and, I must say, useful. I wish some of them DID exist! The framework of the story is used to let our two main characters both discover things about themselves, their love life, and the world in general. In the end, who does get to decide what is and isn’t a word? I suspect this is one of those books that people will either love or hate, if you enjoy the wordplay and the constructive silliness of the invented words, as I did, then you will enjoy it. Here is a representative sample that works as a meta look at the book itself, “Perhaps all readers experience this feeling—a well-crafted sentence runs through the reading mind as a rope runs through hands but when that sentence contains errors or distracting ambiguities, eccentric syntax or bleurghs of vocabulary or grammar, its progress is stalled or coarsened.” It is a quick, enjoyable read that manages to shine a light on the often obscured world of lexicography and also illuminate some truths about life. I greatly enjoyed going along for the ride. ( )
