Overall, I really enjoyed this story. It was about a little boy named Little Diego and his family who lived in Texas. However, his grandfather, Papa Diego lived in Mexico, so they didn’t get to see him very much. This made Little Diego really sad, so he concocted a plan, so that he could go see Papa Diego. My favorite part about the story was the overall message about how important family is. Throughout the story, Little Diego stressed how much he loved Papa Diego and how hard it was for him to live so far away. Another aspect of the story I found interesting were the illustrations. The illustrations were actually 3D illustrations made of clay. I’ve honestly never seen illustrations like them before, so they were definitely very engaging and fun to look at while reading. Finally, I enjoyed how the book was bilingual. On each page the text would be in English and Spanish, which would be great for ELLs who spoke Spanish as a native language because then they would have text in their native language to comprehend.
I would recommend this story for younger readers K-3. However, because there is a lot of text on each page, I would say it is definitely more of a read aloud in K-1. ( )

The first thing that caught my eye was the fact that the author wrote this story in English and Spanish. The author also included America and Mexico into this story. I find this to be very interesting and beneficial to young readers. If someone does not know English yet, they can read the Spanish text, or vise versa. I always love to find books like this! It would be a great resource for a teacher. The central message was family.

Summary: A boy was named after his grandfather, Papa Diego. Even though they lived in two different countries, the boy thought about his grandfather every day. Little Diego's dad had to try his best to explain to him why they can't see his grandfather. He attempted to explain that he's old and it's hard for him to cross the border. His father decided to give little Diego his old superman comic books. Little Diego soon became enchanted with the books and couldn't stop reading them. However, no one knew what Little Diego was thinking while reading the comic books. Everyday he imagined himself becoming superman and flying over to see his grandfather. For his birthday, little Diego decided to ask for a superman suit to follow his imagination of flying to his grandfather in Mexico. He ended up getting his superman suit for his birthday! His happiness soon decreased drastically as he learned that he could not fly. Little Diego thought his birthday was ruined until he walked into a huge surprise in the kitchen. It was Papa Diego! He was very excited! Little Diego knew he would remember this day forever. ( )
