This is a guide to the places in New York State where women who made American history lived or worked, with brief sketches of what each woman accomplished or contributed. This is not about "the first woman" to do this or that. It is about people who accomplished great things, and the people happened to be women. Barbara McClintock was not a great woman geneticist; to say that is subtly to diminish her achievement. She was a Nobel-prize winning geneticist who was a woman. Anna Hyatt Huntington was not a great woman sculptor; she was a great sculptor who was a woman. Painter Elaine de Kooning insisted, "To be put in any category not defined by one's work is to be falsified." We have advanced beyond the segregation of individuals and appreciation of their achievements in gender categories----largely due to the efforts of the first-generation feminists, who are noted in this manuscript. Many women all over the United States have made important contributions in all areas of life, but New York has long been the focus of national attention in publishing, in business, and in the arts. Therefore, the achievements, writings, scientific discoveries, business successes, and leadership of New York women often served as models, inspiring women elsewhere. Their lives were therefore transformative of U.S. history. By noting the achievements of many of these women, this book hopes to inspire many new biographical studies, as well as re-evaluation of the works of once-popular writers and artists. The book includes almost 800 women, but the hardest part of writing has been stopping. I could have researched and included a great many more women. I leave the continuation of this work to others. This guide can be enjoyed at home in an armchair, or it can be taken out while visiting the places. The manuscript will be enjoyed by female and male readers, and particularly young women, who might find inspiration in these women's lives.… (plus d'informations)
