“Duke the Dairy Delight Dog” was a very cute book that I really liked. First, I liked the book because of the character Duke. Duke is a dog that wandered his whole life searching for a home. He wanders into a town called Glendale and comes across a place called “Darla’s Dairy Delight” and instantly knows he has found his home. However, Darla, the owner of the ice cream parlor is a clean freak and does not like dogs. While everyone else in Glendale loves Duke, Darla is not very accepting of him and will not let him into her business. Duke tries everything in his power to make Darla likes him and constantly says to himself “she just needs to get to know me.” After many failed attempts, Duke finally wins the favor of Darla and lives happily ever after as the “Dairy Delight dog.” I liked Duke so much because he was an excellent example of perseverance. Duke knew the Dairy Delight was going to be his home and never gave up on his dream of living there. Duke was an excellent example for people to never give up even when things they want in life don’t instantly come to them. Secondly, I liked the book because of the emphasis placed on home. Duke tried so hard with Darla because he had wandered his entire life and felt like the dairy delight was his home. All humans (and animals) feel a need for a place where they feel comfortable and call home. Also, the last line book says after Darla accepts Duke and lets him live with her, “Because, at long last, Darla’s Dairy Delight truly was “Home of the Fanous Vanilla-Chocolate Swirl.” I believe these lines imply that even though Darla had a place to live before Duke, it was not truly a home. A home is full of love and happiness, and that is what Duke contributed to the Dairy Delight making it a home for him and Darla. I believe “Duke the Dairy Delight Dog” has many meanings. First, I think it is a testament for never giving up seen through Duke’s efforts to become friends with Darla and make her ice cream parlor his home. Secondly, I also think the main idea is to show readers that love and happiness are what makes a home simply not just a place to live. Finally, I think the last message is to show readers how important it is not to judge a book by its cover. At first, Darla viewed Duke as a “monstrous, filthy animal” that she wouldn’t allow in her ice cream parlor. However, through Duke’s efforts to make friends with her Darla realized what a kind animal Duke truly was and they became friends. This is a very important message for readers because sometimes the most unexpected people in life will become the most important to them. “Duke the Dairy Delight Dog” was an adorable book full of simple, yet important messages.
