Bref, "The Last Colony". On y retrouve John Perry, héros et narrateur de "Old Man’s War", qui est devenu colon sur la planète Huckleberry et qui y a la charge d’ombudsman auprès de sa population en grande partie d’origine indienne. Il vit là avec Jane Sagan, son épouse et Zoë, qui est devenue leur fille adoptive; le rêve colonial, en quelque sorte. Jusqu’au jour où l’ancien supérieur de John vient lui proposer une mission et là , les ennuis commencent car, comme de bien entendu, on ne lui dit pas tout.
"The Last Colony" contient la plupart des éléments qui font des deux ouvrages précédents des livres très agréables à lire: de l’humour, un univers intéressant et du suspens. Le tout dans un contexte différent, puisqu’au lieu d’avoir plein de militaires (littéralement) surhormonés, l’action a lieu dans une communauté civile lâchée sur une planète perdue et sauvage. Par contre, le défaut est que la narration se déroule sur plusieurs niveaux différents et devient assez rapidement décousue; il manque à "The Last Colony" une certaine cohésion.
Reste que, malgré ces défauts, "The Last Colony" propose une conclusion audacieuse et bienvenue au dilemme posé par le contexte qui voyait l’humanité s’enferrer dans un isolationnisme de mauvais goût dans un univers multiculturel. Le clin d’œil final du « Commodore Perry » est, comme souvent chez Scalzi, très bien vu.
Dans le genre « science-fiction qui ne se prend pas trop le chou » – et sans présumer de "Zoë’s Tale", un peu hors cycle et que je lirai plus tard – cette série de bouquins vaut assez largement qu’on s’y intéresse. C’est bien écrit et, à défaut d’être d’une originalité décapsulante, ça fourmille de bonnes idées.
