It's probably not surprising that the poems I liked best in this volume were the ones approaching love aslant or stretching the notion of love beyond the romantic. The ones connecting to politics or race or grief were especially powerful and seemed to offer glimpses of a particularly engaging mind and viewpoint. I'd be interested to see how that mind and viewpoint manifest in her other poetry. ( ) And this book is where I fell in love with Nikki Giovanni. I forget whether Ginny discovered this one and recommended it to me or if I did and recommended it to her, but it was one of those books we both fell in love with at the same time, back in college. One of those books that has paid out so many times over in inspiration and love and joy and all the wonderful things that there are about poetry. Just a week or so ago I chose one of these poems to write inside a card for a bridal shower -- everyone loved it. These poems are wonderful. Everything perfect that poetry should be. I read this as a Kindle book, paid a good price and don't feel totally ripped off. There are some good poems in this collection, especially the prose poetry. Giovanni has some good reflections on the black experience and racism in America. But this is a very uneven collection and I thought some poems were poorly written and poorly conceived. ever been kidnapped by a poet if i were a poet i'd kidnap you put you in my phrases and meter you to jones beach or maybe coney island or maybe just to my house lyric you in lilacs dash you in the rain blend into the beach to complement my see play the lyre for you ode you with my love song anything to win you wrap you in the red Black green show you off to mama yeah if i were a poet i'd kid nap you aucune critique | ajouter une critique
