Fiction. Mystery. Historical Fiction. HTML:Lady Georgiana Rannoch is just back from her honeymoon with dashing Darcy O??Mara when a friend in need pulls her into a twisted Gothic tale of betrayal, deception and, most definitely, murder. . . .

I am a bit at loose ends at the moment. My cook, Queenie, is making my new role as mistress of Eynsleigh something akin to constant torture as Darcy is off on another one of his top secret jaunts. And Grandad is busy helping wayward youths avoid lives of crime. So when my dearest friend, Belinda, inherits an old cottage in Cornwall and begs me to go with her to inspect the property, I jump at the chance.
After a heart-stopping journey in Belinda??s beast of a motorcar, we arrive at the creaky old cottage called White Sails and quickly realize that it is completely uninhabitable. Just when I??m starting to wonder if I would have been better off trying to get Queenie to cook a roast that hasn??t been burnt beyond all recognition, we meet Rose Summers, a woman Belinda knew as a child when she spent time in Cornwall. Rose invites us to stay at Trewoma Hall, the lovely estate now owned by her husband, Tony.
Belinda confesses that she never liked Rose and had a fling with Tony years ago, so staying with them is far from ideal but beggars can??t be choosers as they say. Trewoma is not the idyllic house Belinda remembers. There??s something claustrophobic and foreboding about the place. Matters aren??t helped by the oppressively efficient housekeeper Mrs. Mannering or by the fact that Tony seems to want to rekindle whatever he and Belinda once had right under his wife??s nose.
Our increasingly awkward visit soon turns deadly when a member of the household is found murdered and all clues point to Belinda as the prime suspect. I soon learn that some long buried secrets have come back to haunt those in residence at Trewoma Hall and I??ll need to sift through the ruins of their past so Belinda doesn??t lose her chance at

Bowen’s homage to Rebecca, this entry might or might not be a disappointment to those who have read du Maurier’s classic – I’ve never read it myself, so the plot here was new to me, though I could appreciate the allusions and the tip of the hat to the gothic atmosphere.

The story, homage or not, is well-written enough that I don’t think fans of the series will be disappointed. It’s not her absolute best (The Twelve Clues of Christmas, imo) but it’s well-plotted and the characters are well drawn. Darcy has little page time, as usual, but we get a lot more of Belinda and her background, which I enjoyed. Queenie makes a thankfully brief appearance, but otherwise it’s a whole new cast of characters in the wilds of Cornwall, in what ends up to be a delightfully crazy plot.

Eventually though, I’m going to have to cave and read Rebecca. ( )

A good entry in this entertaining series. Lady Georgina is on her own without Darcy or even Queenie, as she tries to save Belinda from jail or even worse; dressing like a drab without even makeup. Georgie is a stranger in a strange land as she sorts out the language, customs, and provincial attitudes in rural Cornwall. Even Royals get no respect here in the boonies. ( )

This is the latest book in Bowen's Royal Spyness cozy mysteries, and is certainly not the strongest story in the series. Georgie is back from her African honeymoon with Darcy and is at Aynsley, her new home, but is at loose ends because Darcy is off on another of his secret missions. Then her old chum, Belinda appears to tell her that she has inherited her grandmother's estate, which includes a cottage in Cornwall and invites Georgie to come with her on an inspection trip.

What then ensues is by Bowen's own admission, a story that is an homage to Daphne DuMaurier's Rebecca. It's silly and contrived and not up to the usual standards of this series. I'm hoping for something better with the next book. ( )

I have always liked this series and thought they were very well-written. This one was well-written but I felt it was slow. I got the homage to Rebecca and Manderley but it gave away who the killer was too early and ruined the mystery aspect. ( )

This book is dedicated to my Cornish kin, the Vyvyans,

with whom I stay every summer in a manor house very like Trengilly.

It's one of my favorite parts of the world,

and they will recognize several of the names and references in the book.

I also want to thank my wonderful agents,

Meg Ruley and Christina Hogrebe,

and the entire team at Jane Rotrosen,

as well as Michelle Vega and the whole team at Berkley.

Working with you is always such a joy.

And lastly, as always, a sincere thank-you to my husband, John,

who is my first reader, editor, driver, porter and all around companion.

We have had many Cornish adventures together,

including driving along those lanes.
