Little did I know that my innocent trip to the Capital Area District Library with the kids and wife would yield such dastardly results. A graphic novel of the Maxx series that I had only ever seen on MTV! Not only that, but it's the first of a series! My glee may have fueled part of my rating, but I am an admitted Maxx fan. The story was spot on, the font used for Mr. Gone was just right, and the artwork was delicious. I'll be looking for the next one when we head back to the library. ( )

So most of all I love the art. Of course since I grew up in the 80's-90's there's also some nostalgia there. I like the plot but after the first 3 issues it seemed to kind of wander. I didn't really enjoy the appearance of Savage Dragon or the shark villain guy, they were sort of jarring. But really this comic is amazingly original, and did I mention I love the art? This makes me very curious what else Sam Kieth worked on after the Maxx. ( )

The art in this is beautiful. Dialogue is perfect, both funny and depressing. The characters were likable, even (especially) Mr. Gone, who is the perfect creepy flamboyant evil villain, giddy with his own twisted cruelty. I liked the way Sam Kieth parodied the entertainment industry in the part about the shark man by interspersing dialogue about society's obsession with violence. This is the standard great comics should aspire to. ( )

Three stars? Four? I don't even know. I'm ridiculously fond of The Maxx, but I don't know if it's actually any good. I keep changing my mind. I've never actually experienced the ending - I've watched the MTV series at least once, but from what I recall that didn't include the end? So hopefully we'll get there this time. ( )

I was first introduced to the Maxx when it was a short animated series featured on MTV. Sureal and magical yet somehow gritty and creepy all at the same time this one has definietly stuck with me for a while. Although this is a superhero book it is full of feminist theory, philisophical ponderings and references to psychology. It also has a good dose of dark humor.

A must-read for any comic book lover looking for something abit different. ( )
