Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. HTML:

Newbery Medal-winning author Patricia MacLachlan has written a magical and funny tale about the joy found in using words, sharing stories, and loving a wondrous dog: Rex.

Grace's aunt is a writer. She works with words every day and teaches Grace interesting words like "melancholy" and "delirious."

But Lily is often "flummoxed" by her writing. Her stories don't go anywhere, her desk is a mess, and her writer's group can't help.

So Lily posts an ad for an assistant: A writer of books needs an assistant, a coach, a helper, for inspiration and some magic!

The next day, Grace opens the door, and there is Rex: a Labrador retriever who will change Grace's life, and Lily's. The word "amazing" is an everyday word for Rex, who inspires Lily, and helps Grace find the words to write her own story.

Grace loves spending time with her aunt Lily. Lily is a writer and teachers Grace interesting words like melancholy and procrastinate. The only problem is Lily has writers block and even her writer’s group is not able to help. She puts an ad in the paper looking for an assistant. The next thing she knows a man shows up in a magician’s hat with a dog named Rex. Rex is not an ordinary dog. He can understand and communicate with humans. He is also able to type and helps Lily with her writing. It makes Grace more interested in writing and telling her story when she has to do a report for school. I would recommend this for any collection owning others by this well-loved author. Rex is a sweet dog who inspires Lily and Grace, who learns more about herself and grows a little along the way. It just goes to show that all you need is someone to believe in you to make things a little better. ( )

I always purchase Patricia MacLachlan's newest book as soon as it comes out. She is always wise and consistent and comforting. As is Rex - of course! ( )

We can find magic in the sunrise, the full moon, a kindness, someone's laughter, and even in a dog who doesn't talk.

Book Dreams

When I was just a baby my mother and father read books to me.

I loved books, the smell of them, the smooth, bright pages that I loved turning.

And the words.

In my crib one night my mother and father found me turning pages in my sleep.

I had book dreams then.

I have book dreams now.

-Grace
