"A magical island. A dangerous task. A burning secret. Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages. When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he's given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they're likely to bring about the end of days. But the children aren't the only secret the island keeps. Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe. As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn. An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place-and realizing that family is yours."--… (plus d'informations)

The House in the Cerulean Sea - Klune
Audio performance by Daniel Henning
4 stars

Awww. This was such a cute story. There’s a solid message about diversity and acceptance, but it never felt preachy.

I had sympathy for Linus Baker in his dead end job. I’ve worked with people like his sadistic, controlling manager and the fools of Extremely Upper Management. It was funny and not funny. “He couldn't believe it was only Wednesday. And it was made worse when he realized it was actually Tuesday.”

I was so glad that he escaped to Marsyas Island. He deserved it. I loved all of the magical characters on that island, but Chauncey was my favorite. He can carry my bags anytime.

Daniel Henning gave a wonderful performance. His voicing of each fantasy character was a perfect fit. ( )

I got the idea for reading this book from the LT Pride Hunt this month. I am not sure why I gave this so many stars. I guess it is because I loved this book so much by the time I finished it that I immediately reread it. Truth is: when I started reading it, I was very nervous. The book starts out with with Linus needing to inspect an island that has magical, and possibly dangerous, creatures. His life is boring. The place where he works is boring and mean. No personal objects, 15 minutes for lunch etc. It was just terrible. Slowly, as the plot develops, things become better but it is not clear that Linus will act on the instincts that suggest a new life for him full of love and joy. I was so tense throughout the book that I don't know if I enjoyed it. However it was extremely well written, makes excellent points and the characters are fantastic. Well worth reading. ( )

This book reminds me of those we read in our youth that make us fall in love with reading. It is inspiring and an uplifting tonic for the soul on dark wintery nights. The audio narration was absolute perfection. ( )

Fantastic book! When everything is all gloomy pick up this book, a nice feel good read to perk you up. Diversity, British-y Good Omens-esque humor, and full of heart warmy feelings. I highly recommend and look forward to more books by this author. ( )

“There are mysteries that may never be solved, no matter how hard we try. And if we spend too long trying to solve them, we may miss what’s right in front of us. The world is a weird and wonderful place. Why must we try and explain it all away?” (p. 114)
“I am but paper. Brittle and thin. I am held up to the sun, and it shines right through me. I get written on, and I can never be used again. These scratches are a history. They’re a story. Hey tell things for others s to read, but they only see the words, and not what the words are written upon. I am but paper, and though there are many like me, none are exactly the same. I am parched parchment. I have lines. I have holes. Get me wet, and I melt. Light me on fire, and I burn. Take me in hardened hands, and I crumple. I tear. I am but paper. Brittle and thin.” (p. 133)
