Having read Onley's latest book in the Necessary Evils series, Lunatic, which features a slight crossover with this series, I decided to give the first book a go. And I wasn't disappointed. I won't say it's anywhere near as good as the Necessary Evils series but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. To be fair though, the whole daddy kink really isn't my thing so I was probably never going to like it as much. Also, it wasn't as carefree as I thought it might be. Wyatt's entire life is a series of traumatic experiences which have left him severely depressed and it was more confronting than I would've liked it to be. But that's also on me, because the blurb does include a trigger warning. I just hadn't expected it to hit me quite as hard as it did. Onley James has a real talent for writing confronting issues.

The romance between them is intense and consuming. There's very little fluff or feelings. There's also little plot outside of their relationship. Or at least, the plot is there, it's just ignored for most of the book and then rushed at the end. I did really like Charlie and I loved her friendship with Wyatt - I just wish there was more of it.

Overall an enjoyable read that will appeal more to those who love hurt/comfort reads. 3.5 stars, rounded to 4. ( )

A surprising five stars: I have mad respect for any author who can take a story element I dislike, and make me understand it better. In this case, it's daddy kink. I have a visceral negative reaction to it, but James gave me what I needed to grok the appeal, even though it'll never ever be mine.

Mad respect.

In large part, it works well because the characters are great, all of them. My favorite is Charlie, of course.

I thought about dropping part of a star for lack of timely action on abuses, but I'm aware it's too close to reality as written, which is a dirty shame as well as morally corrupt. IMHO people who abuse others should suffer a lot more face-punching than happened herein. ( )

This was my first Onley James. A quick and rather enjoyable read, even if it was a bit heavier on the family drama that I’d been expecting of a shortish book that was mostly porn-with-plot (well-written porn, mind you). Drama that was solved way too easily in the end for my liking.

I’ll probably continue this series, though. ( )

Well, we can't all be perfect right? I'm reading this series while I wait for the next book of the Mullvaney's brothers, but I kind of hated it? I like the kink set-up, but it's kind of shitty how the traumas of both the characters are addressed, and their relationship didn't look organic for me. Maybe I will like better the second book, who knows? ( )

Lincoln has just recently left the military and now he's a hot shot bodyguard who has just been hired to basically babysit the adult son of a crappy family morals type senator. Wyatt hates his dad, and well he should, and he's damn near suicidal. He is definitely self-destructive. And frankly, with his father, I would be too.

Wyatt really does need a Daddy, someone who can take care of him and make him feel better, and give him the love that he so desperately needs to have. It's a good thing that Lincoln is there.

I really hate people like Wyatt's dad. I mean, ugh. He should spend eternity burning in a lake of hellfire, with some lava thrown in, just for giggles. ( )
