Dang, this is a bad book. I LOVE Burroughs, but dang. This book is a romance, which I did not see coming, and a toxic one at that. The dinosaurs are just kinda tacked on. Then there is the really troubling/racist view of evolution just kinda wedged in there. The best part of the book is really before they reach the island. ( )

An over-the-top tale of a U-boat crew stranded on an island where evolution progresses from south to north. There are absurd episodes such as the only woman being kidnapped by a Neanderthal and the hero going out to shoot a plesiosaud because he wants a steak dinner.

It was OK, but didn't really float my U-boat. I think the long, tedious lead-in before getting to the Land detracted from the story. Naturally, as with all of Burroughs works, the focus is heavy on adventure but light on character development; sometimes that formula works better than other times. I will read the next installments since they're both short. Hopefully the plots will get a bit tighter and more coherent. ( )
