Für dieses Buch spricht die Kürze, die die Geschichte des Landes auf knapp 300 Seiten zusammenzufassen vermag. Doch gleichzeitig lässt der Autor über weite Strecken den roten Faden vermissen, werden Fakten vergleichsweise lieblos aneinander gereiht, und das Wesentliche verschwindet im Hintergrundrauschen der Details. Eine Besonderheit sind die 'Interpretationen' am Ende jedes Kapitels. Es ist eine sehr gute Idee, des jeweils eben Geschilderte nochmals zusammenfassend und auch in einem größeren Kontext zu betrachten. Doch nach kurzer Zeit scheint die Dynamik dieses Zugangs verlorengegangen zu sein, sodass in den 'Interpretationen' überwiegend nur noch das zusammengetragen wurde, was andere Autoren zum jeweiligen Thema geschrieben hatten (was aber gleichzeitig mit einer sehr detaillierten Bibliographie einhergeht). Auch wenn dies das narrative Element mindert, so stellt dieses Buch jedenfalls eine gute Ausgangsbasis dar, um sich umfassend mit Irlands Geschichte zu befassen. ( )
