For fans of bestselling World War II fiction like Sarah's Key and The Nightingale comes an illuminating tale of courage, sacrifice, and survival, about two couples whose lives are ravaged by Hitler's mad war yet eventually redeemed through the fate of one little girl. Seemingly overnight, the German blitzkrieg of Warsaw in 1939 turns its streets to a war zone and shatters the life of each citizen-Polish, Jewish, or otherwise. Sophie Kumiega, a British bride working in the city's library, awaits news of her husband, Janek, recently deployed with the Polish Air Force. Though Sophie is determined that she and the baby in her womb will stay safe, the days ahead will draw her into the plight of those around her, compelling her to help, whatever the danger. Rosa and Itzhak Dunovich never imagined they would welcome their longed-for first child in the Jewish ghetto, or that they would let anything tear their family apart. But as daily atrocities intensify, Rosa soon faces a terrifying reality: to save their daughter's life, she must send her into hiding. Her only hope of finding her after the war-if any of them survive-is a medallion she cuts in half and places around her neck. Inspired by true events of Poland's darkest days and brightest heroes, The Medallion paints a stunning portrait of war and its aftermath, daring us to believe that when all seems lost, God can make a way forward.… (plus d'informations)

Wow! I rarely give 5 stars but this book deserves it! A gripping, heartwrenching story of love that spans across time, distance and loss. I was very moved by this book, emotionally and spiritually.
Sophie is in Poland awaiting news of her pilot husband. She unexpectedly becomes interwoven with a Jewish family. Through horrors and miraculous circumstances, a family is brought back together after war has torn them apart. Sophie must look inside herself and trust God. ( )

I am almost speechless. Any words I come up with are just not enough. This novel will seep into every fiber of your being. It will rip your heart in to pieces. It will tell of such horrors, yet also such bravery, such love. Oh, oh, my heart!

I give this book more than 5 stars...it’s so much more. I’ve read many books on WWII and each one affects me deeply. This book was so hard to put down, but I had to at times to wipe tears and to take a breath, to wonder at the absolute depravity of man and the absolute determination to live and love by man. Love and forgiveness, loss and renewal, heartbreak and love soaring.

One long quote that touched me:
“I do it—my husband risks his life each day to save others—because that is what Jesus did, and what He wants us to do. He healed, even when it risked His life, and then He died to save others—all of us. Jesus was a Jew, and as Gentiles, we are privileged, through belief in Him as Messiah and Savior, to be grafted into faith with you. We follow in His steps...We do our best, for Him and for His people—our people. We, too, count ourselves children of Abraham, by the grace and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. How could we do less for our family?”

It’s a “must” read and I hope you will treasure it as I have. ( )

Once again Cathy Gohlke has written a masterful story about WWII with "The Medallion". Any work on that time period has to include the atrocities and horrors which occurred then. As hard as it is to read about, she mixes in courage, hope, and the goodness of others as God works in the midst of all the evil. He raises up people to stand with and for Him. It is an amazing story as well as being inspirational. A must-read for anyone studying or interested in WWII. ( )

I have such mixed feelings about The Medallion by Cathy Gohlke. The well-written narrative oozed with historical research that created a very authentic atmosphere. Plot twists and sympathetic characters held my attention night after night as I read this.

Unfortunately, the atrocities depicted in the novel are deeply disturbing. The Medallion was a heavy read that felt so very dark and sad. In spite of the good actions of some characters and a hopeful ending, I wasn’t able push past the darkness of the tragedies. Sadly, it was the darkness, not the hope, that lingered in my mind for days after reading The Medallion. ( )

What a book. I realized how much I had been drawn in to this book when I came up for air and saw that I was already 80% through it and couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I rarely get that engrossed in a book anymore. There are many horrible scenes in this book—and the worst of it is that they really happened.

I really liked the way two couples' stories were told in this book; it was a great way to tell the story of an awful time. The lessons Sophie learned about needing to rely on God were much-needed. I recommend this book to people who like historical fiction and books that leave them thinking. One more thing I appreciated? That this was not a romance! I get quite tired of reading romances.
